Portuguese Appreciation: Because there's no such thing as too much Fernando Meira

Aug 07, 2008 15:10

Hi, I'm new here *waves*

But let's not talk about me, because we're here for the pretty Portuguese, and I've got a whole lot of pictures for you:

Why I love Fernando Meira? Simple, he's the guy who was our captain when we won the championship and almost succeeded in the DFB-Cup, too (let's not talk how his foul in the final would have spoiled the joy of winning, even if we had succeeded. And let's not talk about the season after that one). Despite his anger-management issues, Fernando is quite awesome. Apart from his (quite amazing) looks, he's a guy whose presence one can feel on the pitch, even when you're sitting so far away from the pitch that you can hardly recognize the players.

But let's travel back in time and start where things began, namely, in a club named Vitória Guimarães:

Do you notice anything? No? Exactly. That picture is ELEVEN years old and apart from the hair, he hasn't changed (or aged) one bit.

Now, I don't know what they were doing there, but it looks like fun, doesn't it?

After a while, he transferred to Benfica Lisbon.

(some love his nose, some hate it. I think I do both at the same time)

In 2002 he went to Stuttgart and arrived just in time for one of the most successful seasons in the past years. Ah, those were the days...

New club, new hair

Couldn't keep his hands off our goalkeeper (not that I blame him)

Oh, how he loves to complain!

Does anyone else feel reminded of a predator by seeing him run?

After Zvonimir Soldo retired from professional football, Fernando became captain at Stuttgart in 2006:

And in his first season as Stuttgart's captain, they won the championship, which noone had expected (first everyone thought Bayern would make it, then around the winter break everyone was sure Bremen were going to be the new champions and until a week before the last matchday it was absolutely sure Schalke would finally be successful again, but in the end, Stuttgart had their hands on the ugliest salad dish ever). Cue lots and lots of pictures.

At first, he held the shield the wrong way round during the celebration.

Still my favourite picture from the celebrations

The cup final didn't go as planned, though.

And neither did the next season, but still there were a few good moments to remember.

Alright, I know these are screencaps of not exactly good quality, but may I point out that I love the handbag he's carrying around there?

A few pictures from the Portuguese national team:

After he already wanted to leave last season, he's gone now to play for Galatasaray Istanbul. I'm a little disappointed about the way he left, but I still can't help but with him the best for the future.

And with those wonderful artsy pictures I say goodbye, and thanks for your attention!
