I'm sitting alone in Andie's office, across from Lena's, facing outward toward the staff table. The office is quiet, it's a monday and everyone is busy working off the sins of the weekend. Two very sketchy young men enter, they are latino and one is much bigger than the other. They step into Andie's office. The big one wears a long hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants, his shoes are untied, he has untamed facial hair. The small boy wears a silky green button up shirt and a cheap tye, he is carrying a large black sack. He has a pinched look and is very clean cut. They introduce themselves to me as "The Wholesale Guys". I am confused, but they fail to give further explanation and I assume they belong here. The big one keeps touching things on Andie's desk, he keeps asking questions about her photographs, he is very distracting and unnerving. The small one pulls out a mechanical bunny from the black sack. He turns it on and it begins to sing, both young men suddenly look embarrassed. The small one tells me, in a stuttering and insecure fashion, that this only costs ten dollars. The big one is still touching Andie's desk. The small one now pulls out a round tube from the black sack, he explains to me that it is a magnetic dart board, it is only five dollars. Annoyed, I ask them what they are doing here. They resume the embarrased looks, which on second glance don't look at all genuine. The big one recedes and asks me, apologetically, if I am busy and this is not a good time. I tell them yes. I tell them I am working. I tell them goodbye. They slink out of Andie's office and into Alan's, who is obviously wiser than I am and shoos them out immediately. The sketchy young latino men leave the building and take their black sack with them.
working downtown is odd.
