Discussion Topic - Cho Chang: Treasure or Terror?

This feels slightly off topic, but since you can hardly write a Harry/Cedric story without taking the Ravenclaw girl into consideration I think it applies. I've been sitting on this discussion topic for a while. Seeing that there hasn't been much activity on here lately, I figured now to be the perfect time for it ( Read more... )

I think you have to take into account that these choices weren't made by some special potion that indicated who the champions would REALLY miss most, but presumably it was a decision based on observation and availability.

If Cedric was gay, he obviously didn't reveal this to anyone, so how would whoever made the selection know that Cho was not really the person he would miss most?

Cho was not only Cedric's date to the Yule Ball, but she was also his girlfriend, regardless of what a homosexual Cedric would have really felt for her. Putting her in the water was probably a superficial selection. This is in contrast to Harry and Parvati, whose only connection was a miserable date at the Yule Ball where she eventually ditched him.

And Hermione obviously wasn't really the person that Krum would miss the most after only knowing each other for such a short while, she was just someone who had been romantically linked to him, like Cho was to Cedric. So I guess I tend to take the choices with a grain of salt. And I could be mistaken, but I think Gabrielle was already there for the tournament, wasn't she? Or is my memory of the movie blurring into my book knowledge there...o3o;

...And of course, a simple answer might just be 'they were friends'. xD

If you look back in what I wrote, I did say that Gabrielle is not of-age to compete and therefore would not have come with the other Beauxbatons students to Hogwarts. Only students who wished to compete came.

And I don't know that I agree with your statement that Hermione wasn't the person Krum would miss the most. He clearly was infatuated with her for some time before asking her to the Yule Ball - it's the reason he was in the library all the time. And then after the second task, having only really known each other for little more than two months, he invites her to Bulgaria for the summer to visit him. Afterward they continue to write each other for some time, and three years later he still seems smitten at Bill and Fleur's wedding. Just because they didn't know each other long doesn't mean he doesn't have real and strong feelings for her.

It could've been superficial, you are right. Whether he has feelings for Cho or not, canonically he did spend more time with her than Harry did with his date. However, I find it probably that there WAS some sort of magical way to deduce who would be the person each champion would sorely miss. In a magical competition, why wouldn't there be?
