Even from what little he's managed to hear, he's figured out that a lot of people have died lately (at least two of whom have recently come back), that quite a few more have vanished, that the captain hasn't been heard from in quite some time, that people seem to be half relieved and half worried by this, and that something happened recently that made a whole bunch of stars vanish. Interesting.
