Does hypocrisy hold no bounds?
I was watching television with my wife last night, and she had been waiting to watch "The Elizabeth Smart Story" which for those of you who arent familiar with, is about the little girl who was abducted from her home by a man who claims the be "A Servant of God." I was about half way through the show when I began thinking about censorship. I good majority of this country that is FOR censorship belong to one denomination or another of Christianity. Now Dont get me wrong, this is not another screw the christians rant, for I have moved past that stage. However, I do believe that if Someone is going to promote censorship, they need to not overlook the possibility that their aim is misguided. Explicits in movies, music, video games and even books has long since been a target of pro-censorship organizations across the country and many actions have been taken to "protect our children" from the language, violence, and content that they will inevitably experience anyways. Meanwhile those same children are being taken to churches and taught morals and lessons from a book that has caused more wide spread murder, chaos and panic, then any other form of literature in American history.
Being a father of two little girls, I in part have to decide what is Proper for my girls to be exposed to, and in deciding this I have to take into consideration the reality of humanity and the time they are growing up in. I have found just by their interaction with their classmates, each other and those around them that our, meaning my wife and my, not censoring them by means of television and movies and literature, has effected them greatly, but not in the way that I could conceive as negatively. My six year old is reading and spelling on an average level but her comprehension of what she says and hears is well beyond that of most children I have met. My nine year old is Reading and comprehending 3 grade levels above her own, AND is able to decide on her own weather something is two advanced for her or not. These skills, are in part what censorship is for. Now that is not to say that we do not censor our children. But we only do so for our own sake. WE are not ready to answer some of the questions we have already heard, and would hear if we didnt censor them in some way. However, I am fairly certain that my children will grow up and be much more intelligent than many of their class mates, who have been censored from life as it will be when they get older.
As for The Bible and its role in this ordeal. It became even more clear to me as I watched this show last night how negatively this book as effected not only individuals, but entire societies in our past. Just in the movie it shows how one book is read by one family, instilling in them a promise protection if they are followers of the word, while to another it says that they have been chosen to receive a divine gift and allow this person to justify kidnapping, rape, arson, theft, and even murder, in his own mind, AND allow him to plead insanity. This kind of rhetorical situation that is the argument for censorship and banishment of music, movies and books has occurred plainly in long past and even recent history. However, the cause of these horrible crimes is completely avoided. The fact that this book could be the cause of so many crimes is not only un-thought of, but a preposterous notion, therefor cast off as unjust accusations against Christianity and its denominations.
I feel that someone, (perhaps me if I get the motivation,) needs to force feed this censorship crap back down these peoples throats and see if they can come up with a satisfactory reason why their own material is not censored or banned.
just a though
