Reno and I bought two fish yesterday. they're Oscars. I love them. they're both kinda black, mine is a little more gray and Reno's is pretty damn black (of course). we named them Bonnie and Clyde, because even though they're an aggressive breed of fish our two fishies love each other. Bonnie is kinda lazy and Clyde always watches her back. as soon ( Read more... )

i had those exact same fish. two of them. we had a 60 gallon tank and because of the tank size they only grew about a foot long, each.

we use to feed them mice and baby rats.

i had them or almost 5 years, then i gave them to my friend aaron as a going away present cause he seemed to like them a lot more than i did.

They seemed to have fun when they were bumping into each other and floating sideways.

did you get them when they were small, or after they grew up? they can live for 10-15 years if you take care of them. how quickly would they eat the mice? I like watching them eat guppies, I can't wait till they get huge. a foot long is still pretty good for oscars in captivity, but if you have a HUGE tank they'll grow to 3 feet.

i got them when they were very tiny. im talking like barely an inch. it took them a good couple years to get near a foot. i had them for almost 5 years so dont expect them to get full size quick. it takes a while. once they are full size you can feed them young mice and they will eat them with ease. one gulp and they are gone. if yuo try to give them full grown mice they will be able to et them, but its a very gross death. i wont go into detail but its not a pretty site. not that many people have "HUGE" tanks. i had a 60 gallon tank and that was pretty fuckin big. like 4 feet long, 2 feet deep and about 2.5 feet high. but yah. oscars are a lot of fun if you raise them properly.

since they are young enough you might evenbe able to teach them to eat from your hands. they are really fucking smart. like little dogs in a tank.

totally, even now our fish are smart as fuck. before we fed them guppies one of them was really timid and always hid in the tank, but after the 2-day slaughter of 12 guppies they're both fearless. I can pretty much feed them from my hands but the flakes/pellets we feed them need to be broken up, maybe once they get bigger and I can hold just one piece of food in my fingers they'll be more able to grab it. I know they won't get huge over night and that's part of the fun, I can have them for a really long time. I'm glad we got oscars instead of anything else, they fucking rule.

what would they do with big mice, rip them to shreds? I bet the tank gets all bloody...oscars are sloppy eaters. I hear you can feed them live shrimp and they'll just litter the shells all over the tank.

yah dont feed them mealworms (even though its one of their favorite foods) because the shits they take after eating them will cloud up the water and it'll be just that much harder to clean the tank.

when i fed them mice it wasnt so much bloody, as much as it was just... sad. the mice really suffer. everytiem i fed my fish mice, they always would slit their throat and jsut let them bleed and drown. they would hold the bodys in their mouth and just swim around with them till they eventually drowned or bled to death. then they would slowly eat it from the ass to the head. so for like 6 hours you would see this little mouce head sticking out of the fishes mouth. its pretty sick.. but in a repulsive way.. very cool.
