Quinn can't be everywhere at once, though Lord knows he's tried. Everyone in the castle knows this. That's not a good thing.
If Quinn's working with the goats, he's not in the tunnels, or in the armoury, or at the wreckage of the hotel. Anyone could be there, and he wouldn't see them. Oh, there was a time when they'd set a guard on the armoury pretty regular, but over the past few years that's been less and less necessary. Everyone in the castle's known. Everyone's trusted. As long as Ken gets the same count of each type of weapon and ammo every morning and every evening, there's no real reason to waste someone able-bodied that way. 'Course, the new weapons don't take ammo- not the conventional sort- so there's nothing there to count. As long as there's the same number of blasters in place every morning and every evening, Ken's happy, and Quinn is too.
Eddie's counting on this.
There's a spot out past the hotel, tucked out of sight behind the hills, where a man or two or even three can hide under a rock overhang. The crumbled remains of a road-maintenance facility lie scattered across old grey ground. There's graffiti, but it's older than the presence at the castle- not that it matters to Eddie. He filched some paint (not much- not even enough to be noticed) and brought it with him the first time he had to move supplies between the hotel and the castle. The largest remaining wall was covered in other people's marks, but he ignored them when he slapped up his own. Then again, his was no name, no scrawled words, but an outline and a few interior details. He paid special attention to the eye.
He doesn't get out there often, but when Quinn's distracted- and with the new livestock that happens often enough these days- he does his best to find a reason to get out there. Sometimes he brings a family member or two. Lin or one of the boys- it doesn't matter. They've all got to learn, he reckons.
If they're all very, very lucky, the day is going to come when- thanks to the Milliways-bought weapons, the guns like none they've ever seen before- one of them is going to get off the shot that takes down a dragon.
