CHARACTER NAME: James Howlett known as Logan
FANDOM: AU Marvel 616 comics
BACKGROUND:
Logan was born James Howlett to a rich upper-class railroad-owning family on the frontier of Alberta, Canada's Wild West. He was a sickly child and a young girl named Rose was brought up from the village to take care of him. When the alcoholic groundskeeper was thrown off the property he attempted to run away with James' mother, with whom he was having an affair. James interrupted, his father was shot, and in the trauma of the moment he lashed out at the man, releasing his claws for the first time. Rose was sent off with young James by his grandfather to prevent further scandal and they found their way to a quarry where he worked for his food and board. As he grew into manhood he became close to the manager of the site, who became a father figure and taught him about Japan, which he had visited while a sailor. James now called himself Logan to distance himself from his past, the family name of the groundskeeper that had killed his father and exiled him. However, when he was a teenager the son of the groundskeeper caught up with him looking for revenge, causing Logan to accidentally kill Rose on his claws in a scuffle. Out of his mind with grief, he then ran off into the Alberta wilderness.
While living with wolves in the wild he was discovered by a Blackfoot elder who rehabilitated him to human society through kindness and patience. Logan had an instinctual talent for hunting and tracking which was refined and put to good use as the buffalo that the tribe relied on dwindled. He gained some spiritual peace through life in the bush, becoming less of an animal and more of a man. Though the Blackfoot did not traditionally use horses they were roving hunters and became noted for their horse herds, which were got through raids on enemy tribes. This was where Logan learnt how to master a horse. He also was becoming increasingly close to a Native girl by name of Silver Fox, though courtship was slow because most other tribes-members disapproved of their relationship. However, once again paradise was lost when European frontiersmen made contact with the tribe and infected the population with smallpox. Though Logan had been aware of his ability to heal from injuries faster than normal this was the first time when the "gift" became truly apparent. He was only one of few to survive from the small band that had adopted him and once again having lost a love he followed the buffalo down across the 49th parallel to Montana.
Logan spent a good five years wandering around the American Northwest as a ranch hand, jumping from place to place, remaining on the fringes of society. To him, Dustdevil is just another town.
This is largely taken from canon, for further reference see Wolverine: Origin #1-6 (2006) and Daredevil v2 #53-55 (2003). I've pushed back his birth a few decades and took the story of his time with Maya Lopez's Lakota tribe and transplanted it to a Canadian Blackfoot tribe to make the locations and times fit. Silver Fox is also a part of canon but has been retconned so many times you don't even want to know the original story.
PERSONALITY:
It's easy to think of Logan as an animal. He's quick to fight, quick to drink, quick to love. He is constantly aware of the beast inside him and alternates between fighting it and letting is loose, but in the end he is just looking for a purpose to his life and to better himself. The nickname that was given to him as a teenager working the mines was Wolverine, a short and stinky animal that could nevertheless take down a fully grown deer and never stopped digging until it reached its goal. He was born with the name James Howlett, but after the emergence of his claws and the start of his new life he took on the name of the man who killed his family, Logan. Just the one name serves him just fine.
He doesn't hold stock with many traditional religions, but he is very spiritual, looking for meaning to his painful life as well as a way to become a better man. He meditates, but never prays, he likes the quiet atmosphere of a church but doesn't like to listen to sermons. He has simple tastes - steak, beer, and cigars - but a great appreciation for beauty, especially in nature. He tends to surprise people with his depth. He appears reckless and stupid, tending towards Texas-tradition cowboy wear, but in actuality he loves reading and absorbs knowledge readily. He is a canny tactician and knows the value of stealth, but in the end his skills as a berserker are his trump card. He doesn't like letting loose to the animal within, especially when he blacks out and completely relinquishes control of himself to instinct, but sometimes that's the only way to keep from death. He does enjoy a good fight, and sometimes goes out of his way to start them, but he doesn't like that he enjoys it. Most people only come to respect Logan after getting to know him for a long time because as much as he's a conscientious worker he's a drunk and he'll make a crude joke just as quickly as quote poetry. If someone misunderstands his character, he isn't one to correct them anyways. People can believe what they want about him, but it won't change who he is. He doesn't waste words on fools.
Logan's sense of justice often leads to violent and bloody retribution to those who harm himself or those close to him. Considering the fact that he can heal from any wound, had prodigious fighting experience, and has an animalistic tenacity it's never a good idea to pick a fight. He might not be the heaviest-hitting guy around, but he'll never stop getting back up. The law usually doesn't come into the picture for him, he tends to come in conflict with the sheriffs even when he's doing their job for them. He'll take on assassination jobs if the pay is right, if he owes a favour, or if he feels its necessary to keep the peace, but never against someone he doesn't think has it coming. He is the best at what he does, and what he does isn't very nice. But he'd rather be killed himself than kill an innocent person.
Logan has been known to put himself in danger to save an animal from harm: he helped the fearsome Wendigo out of a bear trap and then lured the hunters away. He respects and enjoys the company of animals because they have simple wants and needs and he can identify with that. That won't stop him from hunting for food or practice, or staring down an alpha male in a fight, but he often treats animals like equals without personifying them. When thrown into a pit of starving lions, the lions are more likely to take him on as leader than tear him apart. He'd rather spend a night out in a thunderstorm than at a high society ball.
Despite the fact that Logan can appear a loner and isn't the type for idle socializing or conversation, he has a sense of responsibility that is unrivalled. He would defend a kid he met on the street in a fight. Giri, a gentleman's honour, or just a father complex. Guilt and sadness for many things weighs heavily on him, but he doesn't often allow himself a chance to mope. Logan has a soft spot for women, children, and animals, but has no sympathy for those who are capable of making their own decisions and have made bad ones. He tends to keep himself to himself, but isn't above offering help to those who need it.
He has had many brief lovers over the years, although after Rose he has tried hard to keep things casual. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and when he falls in love it is the real deal. Despite the fact that most of his relationships have ended in tragedy, he has never stopped loving quickly and deeply. He's not considered the most attractive man, usually described as "short and hairy animal", but a certain type of woman never fails to be attracted to him. The joke is, it's animal magnetism or pheromones. He, on the other hand, never fails to be attracted to strong, self-posessed women. He is always a gentleman when it comes to the fairer sex, but that means treating women with respect.
On the one hand he hasn't fought in the first world war or gone through the Weapon X program yet, nor has he lost his memories, so he is in a much less angry frame of mind than when he joins the X-Men. On the other hand, he hasn't met all the great loves and mentors of his life that encourage him to become a better person either. He is rougher around the edges, less cultured, and more distanced from society than he normally would be. More leaning towards the beast than the prince. In addition, he's only in his thirties and doesn't nearly have the life experience a Logan pushing a hundred would. When he gets older he'll become less hick-y, more comfortable in a tux, more well-travelled, and more world-weary. He'll meet other meta/superhumans and develop a family circle and a home. But all that's to come.
POWER/SKILL: Logan has advanced healing and three bone claws normally kept sheathed in his arms. Those are kept very much on the down-low. He has a certain amount of experience with Weird Shit such as spirits, animal/land gods, magic, and supernatural beasties, but no powers directly relating to them aside from the knowledge he gained from living with a Blackfoot shaman. He's excellent with animals of all kinds, has an acute sense of hearing and smell, is an excellent hunter and tracker, and is hard to keep down in a fight. He's decent with a firearm, but prefers not to use them and he keeps a beaver-tail dagger rather than a pistol with him while working. He has a surprising grasp of Japanese language and tradition especially bushido, but this is also kept rather private. He can also hold his liqueur and pleasure a lady. He's an experienced ranch hand with all that entails, with a special talent for horse-training.
