Don't you hate it when you forget where you heading, and don't have anyone to talk to to get yourself straightened out again.

What's the matter? I won't pretend to be the master of sage advice and may not have any answers, but I'll at least listen.

Well I am job hunting, and a friend I would get inspiration from is too busy to say hi let alone bounce job ideas off of.I really don't want to do anything in my skill level(retail), but going to school doesn't look like an option either. The biggest problem is that I have not worked in three years, and that place went out of business, leaving me with no real references.

I have a friend that's in a very similar situation. She's going to try going through temp agencies. I've done that in the past and it's a good way to get your foot in the door of various companies. (Sometimes they will hire you as a temp through the agency and then if anything permanent comes up and you're doing a good job, they may offer the job to you). Have you considered anything like that?

Oh yes, I have applied for one of Hewlett Packard's temp agency(they have three) and will apply for the others soon. I also have apps in at some local temp places too. :)

Sadly, this isn't one of those problems that can be solved by just talking to friends, is it? If I could, I'd wave my magic wand and you'd have your dream job tomorrow. Keep a stiff upper lip. It's tough out there right now and it's easy to feel defeated. There must be something out there for you, though. And good for you for trying the temp agencies. A lot of people shun them, thinking they won't get a "real job" or they'll end up with a job they really hate. Glad to know you aren't putting up barriers like that for yourself.

Yeah I want something that will give me some skills I can apply toward better jobs, having been a cashier, and that was three years ago and they closed, doesn't give me much in the way of skills. The problem is that even the temp places want references. I wanted to be a jeweler but couldn't find anyone to take me under their wing, not long term, anyway. I swear I live in the worst state when it comes to jobs,Oregon. Thanks for your support.

I was lamenting about some of the same things to my mom the other day. I've had a number of jobs and have a lot of skills, but nothing that will get me a great job. Can't really afford to go back to school, unless I try to work and go to school at the same time, which never has worked for me. And a lot of places don't like to hire people that have no experience, but you can't get experience until you're hired...

Central Iowa is still one of the easiest places to find a job, but it's still tough to get anything decent here!

I have a friend that recently became a jeweler. She's working for herself, out of her home. I'll have to see if I can find out the details about this and get back to you on it.

The big problem with jeweler stuff is the cost of supplies, gold isn't cheap, so you can imagine what some of the tools cost.

Yeah, I know it cost her a pretty penny to get the supplies. She worked a lot of crappy jobs and saved and saved to get there.
