I arrived in Dubai last night. This city is out of control-- half of it is a relatively new "old city" and the other half is like Las Vegas for people with real money. And it's all good. The place truly is an emirate in the real sense: the growth of the city is more or less the result of decisions made by The Ruler (as was referred to in this morning's newspaper). When you see a city like this, that is cosmopolitan through and through (relatively few people I've seen have been truly Emirati-- the rest are foreigners paid for with oil and free trade) and virtually crime-free, you have to wonder what the big deal with this democracy thing is.
And I got a (very blurry) picture of the Burj Dubai for arettber. It's still pretty stubby right now.
