hm.

if i were in ur shoes, that student would be dead. and others who persist. i guess it's a good thing i'm not a teacher. and, knowing me as well as u do, u know that they have a high chance of being dead if i was really in ur shoes.

i think the kid is being a grade whore and try to baby for it. stand firm! i don't know about u, but i remember the "mean" teachers more than the nice ones. i really doubt this education thing is a "cultural difference". cuz i had a professor from overseas, and...well..he was hardcore. his lectures were contradicting sprinkled with bad english, but at least he was hardcore and firm regarding grading.

if the idiot kid persists...my counter argument would be:
so..if u claim to know hw is important and must be turned in, why weren't u more active in buying/borrowing a book? i mean...unless they're loners or something...but even then. this is a university? dude. be an adult. stfu and suck it up.

unless u like..give in...but only in the form of extra credit at the end of semester.

i am angry that they made u angry.

lemme know if i should visit and beat some kids up for u.

unless u give in. then we need to have a talk, girl.

i mean...i guess its a good thing the kid isn't dead?

au contraire! i feel better now, thank you :) i think i was mostly angry because i've been really frustrated with the whole "lost in translation" aspect (as in, i think i'm giving clear instructions, and i think students understand, but then they really don't) and this was like the epitome of it all. last night i was trying really hard to put it into perspective (it's only one student!!!) but for some reason i really couldn't, so i had to post an explosive entry. thank you for your empathy, and i thought your comment gave a good laugh (not that your shared anger is funny, but you know what i mean :)). i'll update on the status of this student next week, when i see her again :)

Hi Tiff!

I'm happy to hear that you're teaching, congrats!

I totally agree that you should stand firm to your policies regarding grading/hw. I understand somewhat of the situation you're in. You want them to succeed. You want to be the "nice" teacher and at times, you become fairlly aquainted with them. However, I learned from my class that the minute you deviate from your policy is the minute that they start to walk all over you. Stand firm and I'm sure you'll be fine. From your students' emails, it seems that you're doing a great job! Keep it up! =)
