"If James doesn't magically cool the reception, I'm going starkers." Sirius said, pulling at his gray dress robes. The weather was sweltering and the thick fabric was not doing anything to help in the matter. He was sitting beneath the canopy of pastel blue and green fabric. If he closed his eyes and listened carefully he could hear the rush of the ocean beneath the cliff side wedding.

"Oh, shut it, no one wants to see that, Pads." said Remus, quietly, while watching an usher direct James's great aunt to her seat.

"Au contraire, my dear Moonikins. Plenty of people want to see it, but as I recall, only one person gets that pleasure."

Remus blushed scarlet.

Peter chose that unfortunate moment to take his concentration off the progress of a butterfly and turn his attention to the conversation at hand. "See what?" Thankfully, the music signaling the beginning of the wedding fell down upon them from an unseen source.

James was standing at the end of the aisle, in front of the podium, looking very nervous. He was wearing black dress robes, a red tie just visible from beneath the collar. Lily's younger cousin came down the row, tossing flowers eagerly at their feet. A long line of bridesmaids came through next, mostly relatives of James and Lily that Sirius could not place. Finally, there was Lily, arm and arm with her father who had greying hair and walked with a limp. She wore pure white dress robes, with a single yellow flower pinned to the front. Her red hair burned like fire on snow, completely surreal.

The music ended in a crescendo of notes as Lily met James at the podium.

A small wizard that Sirius recognized as Professor Flitwick stood in front of the pair. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here today to celebrate the joining of Lily Evans and James Potter.

Sirius was not listening to him, however. He was watching the expression on his best mate's face. Just moments ago he looked scared shitless, but now he was looking at Lily and seemed so confident. Sirius was overcome with love, happiness and even sadness, as though he was losing his best friend.

He fumbled blindly for Moony's hand and squeezed it. Remus rubbed his fingers over the top of Padfoot’s palm, trying to say without words that he understood.

"Lily Evans, do you take James Potter to be your magically wedded husband?"

"I do."

"And James Potter do you take Lily Evans to be your magically wedded wife?"

"Hell yeah," he proclaimed, but with a fierce look from Lily, he stammered, "I - uh - do."

“With the power rested in me - " before he could finish Lily and James were in the middle of a very passionate kiss. "Well, by all means."

Sirius glanced over at Remus, their fingers still intertwined, and saw that tears were streaking down his face but a grin spread across his cheeks like dawn awakening.

-

The reception was held down on the beach, beneath a white tent. It was cool inside, and a tiled floor replaced the beach’s hot sand. A refreshment table was set up off to the side with an assortment of sweets, pumpkin pasties, cauldron cakes, puddings and butterbeers.

Many couples were already on the dance floor, but Remus stood with an open butterbeer to his lips, drinking solemnly. Sirius took the drink out of his grip and grabbed his hand.

"We're dancing," he said simply, pulling Remus into a tight embrace.

"Fine, but I'm leading because you lead like a girl," Moony said, slyly.

"Hey, hey! I'm not the one who was crying just moments - "

"Shut up and dance," Remus told him. He was doing a fancy sort of jig with his feet that Sirius could not quite interpret, but he went along with it, feeling the music pulse through his body. He moved with the beats, not matching Remus.

"Sirius," Remus said, glancing around at the people nearest them, his pace slowing. A circle had opened up as people pushed back away from them. "People are staring." He began to pull away, but Padfoot gripped his hands tightly.

"You're a good dancer."

"I don't think that's why - " The somewhat smaller man began, but Sirius cut him off.

"They're jealous. Just look at me." He told him, taking his hand and twirling him in a circle. That was all it took, there were only the two of them there, dancing to the music but not quite hearing it.

At some point Lily and James had come up to dance quite close to them - Prongs giving them the thumbs up. He dipped Lily and began to do a clumsy rumba with his hands on her hips. Sirius snickered; they were really quite bad.

The song ended and they walked off the dance floor to the bar. People were still glancing curiously at them. Sirius, so comfortable in the limelight, put his arm around Remus' waist protectively. Padfoot handed the other boy a butterbeer and took one for himself.

"Marry me?" He asked taking Remus, who sprayed a mouthful of his drink down his front by surprise.

"What?"

"Remus Lupin, will you marry me?"

"You know we can't." He was looking at the other boy with curiosity and doubt written on every line and scar of his face.

"If James can, I can. We can have a stag party and get sloshed on other people's money. Then we can get presents and have a wedding. Just like James."

"So, you want to marry me for the presents?" Remus asked, the humor showing too clearly in his voice.

"No. And I know what you're going to say. You’re going to say 'we can't marry,' and we bloody well can. I don't care what the ministry or England says. I want everyone who matters to know that you are mine and I am yours and all that good stuff."

"Is this about that girl at work hitting on me? Because I’ll have you know - "

"No! This is about you and me." Sirius said, quietly.

Remus was contemplative for a moment before speaking. "Okay… but I want a very expensive engagement ring -” Sirius was kissing him so hard he thought his lips might bruise. When they parted, he felt somewhat dazed. "That works nicely."

"Now that it's settled, let's go swimming!" Padfoot exclaimed, pointing in the direction of the ocean.

"I haven't brought any trunks."

"I know."
