With the recent explosion in severity and publicity concerning the Terry Schiavo case, everyone is bound to have an opinion. One cannot turn on the news for five minutes without hearing a ‘critical update’ regarding the situation. I have formulated my own opinions on the matter, but that is not what concerns me. The worry I have is the contradictions made by the Christian extremists who are protesting the court’s ruling. One self-proclaimed Christian man, among many others, was arrested for trying to steal a gun and ‘save Terri’. It seems to me as if this group of Christian protesters is ignoring the living and siding with an unsalvageable death. The man who allegedly tried to pilfer a gun has his priorities reversed. He was willing to endanger the lives of countless individuals in order to attempt to save a woman who is terminally brain-dead. Another troubling aspect of this situation is the Christian extremists who proclaim that the courts are taking away a life that God has been sustaining. This is, in fact, contradictory to the teachings of the Christian religion. If these people truly followed their faith, they would have let Terri go after the all signs that her body had given up. In religious terms, God decided it was her turn to go to heaven some years ago. We are inexcusably trapping her in between life and death, preventing her from reaching the gates of heaven by inserting science into the equation. She has been late for her appointment with God for fifteen years now; I believe it is time to let her go.
