In case you havent heard, today, March 1st 2007, is the 50th birthday of Dr. Seuss' Cat In the Hat! He is probably the most influential children's book character ever created, and helped numerous children, not only across the country, but around the world, learn how to read.
It's especially important for me for a couple reasons. One, because like the millions of other children, Dr. Seuss was a major influence in my reading and writing growing up. Two, this year I'm involved with Seussical, an especially eccentric and fun production which I love being part of. Three, my sister Alison works as a copy editor for Random House Children's Books, who are in charge with all of the production and reproduction of the entire Dr. Seuss collection.
Random House Children's Books are asking people to send the Cat In the Hat a birthday card. For every card the Cat gets, they are going to donate a book to First Book, a nonprofit that collects and distributes books to children who have absolutely no books in their home.
