One week, two days. Tick, tock.
I'm teaching social studies with reckless abandon, because in the last two weeks it's generally accepted that the "canned" curriculum (the basal math and reading program) goes down the tubes, and teachers finally get to be creative. We're studying Native American culture, moving onto Spanish exploration and settlement Monday, and sliding into western expansion on Wednesday. Whee! This was actually my degree, and so being able to use it is JOYOUS! I'm positively gleeful. We're studying petrogyphs and the Pueblo Indians tomorrow, and my motto will be: "If you're not making a mess, you're not learning!"
Which I won't tell the kids, because they will take me at my word and it will be BAD.
In other news, I was unexpectedly (well, sort of. I know the consequences of being an active participant) elected Chairman of the school's Instructional Council on Monday. It's a little daunting, because the IC's role is to decide on any issues affecting instruction at the school - of which there are many. It's also daunting because I've only been teaching two years and don't actually know ANYTHING. However, it was extremely flattering to realize that my colleagues have a certain degree of faith in my abilities (to organize, if nothing else). So that'll be another challenge for next year.
