After a phenomenal couple speeches at the Democratic National Convention, I was outraged (although I have to admit that I absolutely saw this coming) about the stunts that the McCain campaign pulled. First, I knew he had to opt for a woman running-mate to have a prayer in the election (insert witty joke about conservative Evangelicals here), but I was a little disconcerted that he picked such a...well, redneck is the only word I can think of. Basically, an inexperienced bumpkin who likes guns and doesn't like abortion. Is this what the election is going to boil down to? Way to appeal to the lowest common denominator there, McCain. I wonder if he was counting on her inexperience NOT being brought up, due to the fact that Obama doesn't have many years of service, either? That will be interesting to see how each side handles that issue.
I was further outraged by the careful timing of his announcement. I saw a total of three headlines on my RSS feed about the bold statements made by Obama during his acceptance speech. And then I saw nothing at all - just headlines about Palin. Well played, McCain. If you have nothing to offer, it's probably a good idea to turn the media's attention away from someone who actually has a plan for governance.
So now I guess I just make another donation to the Obama/Biden campaign, and growl softly to myself. One awesome piece of news, though: I've been really amazed at how excited people are about Obama in the community I work in - and just standing in line at the store. In 2004, you NEVER would have had people talk openly about how they favored one candidate or another - it was too divisive. Now, though, it's as if people just figure "We're all Obama fans," and are willing to discuss this with perfect strangers. It's really exciting, and very awesome.
Hopefully this won't lose momentum before the election.
