Flicks I've Seen In January

Waking Life (2001)

For the second time. Remains a brilliant, awe-inspiring and mind-blowing exploration of life, the universe and everything whipped up with some dazzling animation.

Dr. No (1962)

For the nth time. Action, adventure, sex, spying... great times.

Smokin' Aces (2007)

A bit disappointing. Some really juicy big, dumb shoot-'em-up scenes - but also some pointless, pretentious, embarassing, energy-draining, illogical attempts to make the whole thing "mean" more than it ever needed to. Smokin' Aces never had a Keyser Soze up its sleeve for a second - and in fumbling so desperately for one it managed to blow a potentially winning hand.

Rocky III (1982)

Fucking brilliant! "I don't hate him, I just pity the fool!" and etc.

Night At The Museum (2006)

There's worse ways to kill time, but in spite of a stunning cast list and a sound pitch it just never comes close to delivering the Big Fun it promises, and the laugh-a-minute ratio is kept bubbled firmly down in the two-star zone. Dud of the month, like.

Apocalypto (2006)

Visually stunning, emotionally visceral and bloody satisfying. If you can bring yourself to go see something Mel Gibson directed these days, that is.

Rocky IV (1985)

Fucking brilliant! Big fuck-off robots! and etc.

Rocky V (1990)

Which I actually liked a lot. Still the same crackling dialogue and wonderful characters, if you ask me. "We don't need 'em", Rocky tells the sleazy boxing manager guy as he enters Rocky's now humble abode with arms full of presents. "So give them to your neighbours" comes the instant not-a-beat-missing response. Hurrah! Throw in 99 more moments like that and you've got yourself Rocky V. The actual final fight with Tommy does lack the impact of previous battles, but that's a minor quibble. Especilly when the real ending is Rocky and his son heading on into the art museum. When told by his son he'll really like Picasso, Rocky's response? "Oh, I'm sure. You know, I like just about everybody". Don't that bring a smile to your face?

Rocky Balboa (2006)

The sixth great entry in the series holds its own, champ-style. Excellent final fight.

It Happened One Night (1934)

Hilarious, sorta thing. Gem of the month, even.

Coffee And Cigarettes (2004)

For the second time. Magic and mesmerising, elegant and hilarious - Tom Waits and Iggy Pop! Brilliant flick.
