this icon consists of two parts, the easy part and well the let's say medium part? easy part is the coloring, which goes first. second part is the painting and defining, which are some of the techniques i learned from this lovely tutorial by the very talented kawaii_chicken. you will notice many techniques used from that tutorial as i explain the process of painting this icon.

PART #1 [ COLORING ] :

Step #1:
As you can notice, the cap is very dark and blue-ish. concentrating on the brightness first. i duplicated the base layer and set it to screen 50% fill.

Step #2:
time to get rid of the blue shadows and bring on some reds and yellows. i added a new color balance layer with the following settings:
Midtones: +36, -27, -32
Shadows: -32, 0 , 0

Step #3:
now i'm going to add a selective color layer for two reasons. 1- to bring out more of the reds and yellows and the yellows and magenta in the reds especially. 2- vibe up the cyan in ten's shirt. so i added a selective color layer with the following settings:
REDS:
cyan> -6 , magenta> +50 , yellow> +51
YELLOWS:
cyan> -41 , magenta> +14 , yellow> +42
CYANS:
cyan> +100 , magenta> -100 , yellow> +10
MAGENTAS:
cyan > -100 , magenta> +100 , yellow> +100
NEUTRALS:
yellows> +11

 →

(optional) i did so not on the above example. but you could save it for later, i merged everything and sharpened it and lowered the opacity a little.

Step #4:
now i wanted to create some sort of light so i brushed a new layer with off-white from the right and blue from the top left, it looks like this:

i set it to screen 50% fill.

Step #5:
you could notice a huge loss of contrast now, so i merged everything in a new layer ctrl+alt+shift+e and set it to soft light. and for a bit more smoothness i added a small amount of gaussian blur like 2 or 3px. filter>blur>gaussian blur

Step #6:
more contrast. merge everything in a new layer again. and add a larger amount of blur this time 5px probably. and desaturate it. imgage>adjustment>desaturate. set this layer to hard light 50% opacity.

Step #9&10:
new vibrance layer:
vibrance: +75
new brightness/contrast layer:
contrast: 38

( now you could add some sharpening if you haven't because we're moving to the painting part)

PART #2 [ PAINTING ] :

all of what i learned about painting graphics is from the tutorial by kawaii_chicken, i never tried painting but i have liked it very much since i read that tutorial. especially the effect i have in the ending result, it's normally very cool.

first thing i did was defining ten's jawline, nose and eyes. i did so with a soft round brush 3px and very light off-white color and the pen tool. (the red arrows show you exactly where i defined):

and then i wanted to remove every pixel i had in the icon so i picked the smudge tool, and zoomed in to like 1200% (trust me, makes it a lot easier) and (carefully tho) smudged all the areas that had pixels.

i went along defining other areas:

and then i sharpened, you could not do that if you want to. and then i painted over my background to make it solid yellow. also zoomed in and used a round brush with yellow as my foreground color.

then the last layer was a new vibrance layer with vibrance +100 to vibe everything up!

that's everything! :) i hope it's helpful/clear enough.

ask me/request anything! :)
