These shorts are set in the Returnverse (Ithilienne is Dawn/Tindómë's daughter).

The Returnverse stories are at Twisting the Hellmouth here, in the order they were written. They are also here at Faerie where they were posted in story chronological order.

Before Ithilienne was born her parents had realised that her brother, Haldirin, could see people that no-one else could - those fëar that the elves referred to as ‘houseless’, and mortals called ‘ghosts’. They had concluded that it was an effect of being the son of an elf and The Key and, as an adult, he had even used the ability to try and reassure Legolas’ father that his wife must have followed Lord Namo’s call when she died and so he could be reunited with her if he sailed West.

Ithilienne had her own ideas about how The Key in her blood might show in her fëa as well as her hröa. She wished she had talked to Naneth about them before her parents had gone off with Legolas to Tirion and beyond. Or to Haldirin. Perhaps he would have been even better, but he had also gone on what Naneth referred to as The Valinor Trail.

But she had really hoped that Mithrandalf would be happy to just use her blood to open a couple of nice portals back to Middle Earth.

Well, as that was so not going to happen, she really would have to do a bit of serious thinking, and a bit of experimentation. And that would have been a lot easier if Haldirin, Tharhîwon, or Legolas were still here in Alqualondë, at least to start with.

It was Legolas who had given her the first clue, really.

He had told her, more than once, that she dreamed loudly. Not that she cried out in her sleep but that he could find himself following the same dream path even when they were not sharing a bed. He had commented that she must have inherited this from Naneth as Adar said that she also dreamed loudly.

Perhaps he meant it was related to The Key or perhaps he had not really thought of it. But Ithilienne thought it very likely that it was.

Now she needed to find out for herself how to use this…

And just how loudly she could dream if she really tried.

.......................
In J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium, fëa and hröa are words for "soul" and "body" - and elves believe the fëa is the real elf - the hröa is more an outer shell.
