Since becoming Head of Homeworld Security, Jack had learned many things. He learned that the Stargate, while a well kept secret, was not in the top 5 of the best kept secrets. And tonight, was all about one of those best kept secrets - the Demon Research Initiative, or Initiative for short.

Apparently the size of that particular military foul-up was so great that all the records had been scrubbed, deleted and all around destroyed.

All except for a contact number along with a very specific, if somewhat odd note. It read “In case of emergency call. In case of repeat of before, you got what you deserved.” Curious, it had taken him two months to get through the red tape and track down the correct person to tell him what was missing in the file. And when he found out, he wasn't happy. He knew, however, that they needed to come to terms with the people mentioned, so he called, personally. And had been hung up on, personally, about twenty times before finally getting someone with enough authority to talk to him for a bit.

He had to admit, once they finally met face to face, he liked the group. They didn't follow any conventions he could see and, honestly, seemed to run more like Hogwarts than MI6, but that had made it easier for him to relate. He was, for the first time in far too long, able not only to cut to the chase and hammer out the basics of an agreement in under an hour, but found a group of people who could snark on his level.

In fact, tonight was a “Welcome to Washington” get together before they sat down and spent hours, days and maybe weeks, sorting through all of the fine print the lawyers developed to torture them before, hopefully, signing off.

“Jack.”

“Buffy.”

“Not bad for this sort of thing. The food has been exceptional as well. Do you know who they used?”

“No clue,” Jack admitted. “But I agree on you about the food. It's not all that common that the finger food is flavorful.”

“True. And the little chocolate cheese things are absolutely to die for.”

“That they are,” Jack agreed with a smile. He and Buffy had originally found each other in the crowded room by zeroing in on that particular treat. Speaking of the hors d'oeuvre he spotted one of the servers picking up the tray of them that had only one left. He really kind of wanted it, especially because he'd heard one of the servers comment that they hadn't made enough given how popular they were. “Excuse me a moment. Just want to grab something,” he said heading toward the server.

He inwardly cursed when he noticed Buffy zero in on the same thing he did. Doing his best to move through the crowd without getting caught in conversation, he kept an eye on Buffy doing the same on a slightly different vector. A smile of triumph began to creep across his face, knowing he was going to reach the tray first when he suddenly found himself with an armful of Lady Preston. “Are you all right?” he asked as he helped her get her balance. He tried not to shudder at the lascivious look she sent him.

“Quite all right now,” she replied, latching onto his arm.

Jack looked over her head and saw Buffy savoring the small hors d'oeuvre. He could only sigh and try to escape from Lady Preston. He didn't know his savior was nearby.

“Lady Preston!” Xander greeted, appearing suddenly by Jack. “James just cornered one of the Colonels and is talking him into a solo flight in one of the fighter jets.”

“He better not be,” Lady Preston responded, dropping the General's arm and marching off to find her wayward son.

“Thanks for the save,” Jack greeted.

Xander laughed. “No problem. When I saw both Buffy and you headed toward the same food tray, I figured something like that might happen.”

“You figured I'd run into Lady Preston?”

The look on Xander's face was amused. “She didn't end up in your arms entirely by accident. Buffy may have diverted her there to slow you down.”

“She what?” Jack asked amazed and frustrated that he hadn't thought of something similar. He'd obviously been out of the field for too long.

“Yeah. A word of advice? Never get between a Slayer and her food.”

End
