Notes: Starting this 15 minutes before I need to go to bed while tired from a long day and a visit to my mom in the hospital. I don't see this going well for anyone - the characters or me. Loosely related to the series with Buffy and Dawn in the M7 Old West universe. More like an AU of that.

The guns finally fell silent. They waited as the gentle breeze blew away the smoke from their battle.

All of them remained sheltered in place while they waited.

The number of bullets they had fired had made it impossible to see who and what were hit. Enclosed caves, aside from amplifying the sound (and was Dawn ever grateful for the cotton wool in her ears to protect them, though she'd much prefer regular ear plugs), also trapped the smoke and made it hard to see.

As they waited, Dawn thought over what brought them to this point.

Having finally begun to believe that the supernatural would leave them alone here, they had missed the early signs of a cult settling into the area.

The best they could figure, these people had been here for three months before Buffy first picked up on something supernatural going on in the area. It took them and the Seven another month complete to locate their base of operations.

In the mean time, Buffy had sent telegraphs back and forth to their publisher in New York who knew a thing or two about the Supernatural world. Nothing much had come through until last week when a packet arrived on the train and then was ridden out on the postal wagon. It contained information on the cult and their goal. It was enough - they thought - to put an end to the group's ploy.

Their plan coming in had been fairly simple. Vin and Buffy had mapped out the cave system the group was using and determined there were two ways in and out of their main cavern.

The team would split up with JD, Vin, Buffy and Ezra entering from the back through a series of smaller tunnels while Chris, Buck, Josiah, Nathan and herself entered through the front entrance.

Things seemed to go well, but the head cultist had already begun some sort of ritual when they showed up. That was one contingency they'd planned for, though. In the case of ritual, Buffy, Vin and Josiah would move toward the location and focus on stopping it while the rest kept the other cultists at bay.

Now that the smoke was clearing, Dawn scanned the room.

She saw the cultists all on the ground, some groaning and clutching wounds, others weren't moving at all.

In the middle of the room, though, the lead cultist, the one who was running the ritual, was obviously dead and showing the signs of being stopped with extreme prejudice by both Buffy and Vin. The only question they had left was where the two were.

Glancing at Chris and getting the go-ahead to move into the room.

Dawn focused on getting to the area where she expected Vin and Buffy to be. She didn't initially notice Chris by her side until they reached the area where the alter and table before it had been. It was all now a pile of rubble.

Before she could despair, she heard the sound of things shifting and immediately started removing the rubble from the top down, vaguely registering Chris doing the same.

An uncertain time later - because, honestly, it had stopped having meaning - made their way down to a small opening from which they heard a cough, though it sounded a little strange to her.

Ignoring that feeling, Dawn and Chris not worked more carefully to remove the last of the rubble and free her sister and their friend.

When the two of them removed the last, large piece of stone blocking in Buffy and Vin, they both froze at the sight before them, unable to do anything but stare in disbelief for the moment.

It was Chris who recovered first and used one of Vin's favorite sayings, “Aw, hell.”

There was a high-pitched gasp as a tiny hand flew to cover the mouth of what Dawn recognized as a five-year-old Buffy.

“Hey, Mister,” came the scolding from, guessing by his appearance, a six-year-old Vin Tanner. "You shouldn't swear. Especially not in front of ladies."
