Notes: Was looking for a way to cross these that wouldn't create too much havoc in Middle Earth. Found it! ;-) Also, not strictly compliant with BTVS episodes or the way mental hospitals really work.
Working in this ward wasn't her favorite option, but with only a few months to retirement, it was probably the best way to ease into it. The patients here were lost so deeply in their delusions that, aside from the occasional mumblings, they were no trouble at all.
Glancing at the clock, she saw there were three more hours until she was to leave. Ah, well. Maybe another cup of coffee would help pass the time.
As the nurse rose to go to the coffee maker, a form, familiar to a certain blonde Slayer, but invisible to everyone else moved down the hallway, worry lining his face.
No one had listened to him when things first went wrong, but he had foreseen this. He alone was certain it would happen and had set events in motion that would give this world one small chance, one small window of opportunity.
Morgoth's best agent would not go quietly and had knowledge the other Vala and Maia had denied did or could possibly exist.
But it did.
Now this world would pay for their mistake.
It had taken Whistler too long to find out where Sauron had hidden his body and to find the appropriate vessel to counter him. As it was, he'd had to manipulate connections across multiple universes to develop even this much of a chance to succeed, to keep this world from falling to darkness. And it wasn't much of a chance.
With any luck, once the Buffy in the other world broke the hold of the poison that made her more aware of this world, the Buffy in this world would awaken and prove just as tough, tenacious, resilient and victorious as the one in the other world. Especially if, as he hoped, the Slayer spirit he felt in her stayed after the connection was broken.

A roar of rage tore from him as his tower began to crumble. The hobbit had done it, had destroyed the ring and ruined his plans. The roar of rage echoed across the plains until a strong feeling overtook him and he could feel his throat burn as his cry became something else and his body forced its way into a sitting position.
Taking a breath for the first time in more than an age, hid mind caught up to what was going on around him. His plan from so long ago worked. He had been returned to his body through the small crack between universes that he'd found.
His plan worked.
He held out an arm and examined it. He would need time to recover and learn his new world, but he had once been charming, he could be so again, and there were always willing minions.
When the door burst open and a nurse came in, he quickly schooled his features and prepared to find out about his new world.

Joyce Summers stood, startled at the sound of the shout from down the hall. She'd just told her daughter, who had been somewhat more lucid today that she had a world of strength in her heart. She had watched her baby girl drift off to sleep.
Worried for her daughter's safety, she moved to the door and watched the nurse enter a room down the hall. She stayed watching that scene to make sure Buffy would be safe and missed Buffy's eyes opening behind her, intent and alert.
Whistler stared back at the petite blond in the bed, who moments before had been sleeping but was now laser-focused on him, had been focused on him from the moment he entered. The connection was gone, but the Slayer spirit was still there. Good.
“Whistler,” she greeted softly, her voice not welcoming.
He made sure that her mother couldn't hear their conversation.
“Hey, kid,” he greeted. “We'll help you figure things out and get you set up, but... The world needs you, Buffy Summers. A new big bad just woke up and has not-so-nice plans for this world. The odds will be against you and time is short, but you'll have what help can be given. I hate to ask, but I need to. Are you ready to be strong?”
