Link did not understand how he knew the things he knew. Like that a cellphone was a wireless communication device. Or that a car was a mechanical horse. He knew that Buffy was a Slayer, one of thousands. Demons could be killed, some by wood, others by fire, and beheading was always a good backup option.
These things were no surprise to him. But the clarity with which he understood marking of time and modern technology was astounding.
And highly suspicious.
The message from his Shiek Slate danced in his head: When once more the Master Sword lays upon the Hero of Time, he shall awaken.
It still made no sense. Buffy had searched the chamber but found no blade. She had carried only a stake.
His attention snapped back to the present. More than six weeks he had been in Buffy’s company as they searched for information about the Master Sword, Zelda, Hyrule, Ganon, and the Hero of Time. But still they found nothing. Then at last, one of Buffy’s friends had discovered a lead. They were in Africa, along a stretch of savannah that was crawling with life.
“It’s good to see you,” Buffy said to her friend.
Xander smiled, his lined face turning to her. “I missed you too, Buffy.”
“Where are we going?”
“A place that a couple of our Slayers and Watchers have been looking for since they were read in.”
“Where?” Link asked.
But Xander just smiled and pressed the gas a little harder.
Hours later they reached a cave.
Buffy stared at it, not moving from her seat.
“What is this?” she whispered, but she did not wait for an answer. She was out of the car and running.
Link launched himself out of the jeep and followed her into the cave. It was dark, but it crackled with magical residue.
“What is this?” he asked.
Xander entered behind them. “This is the birthplace of the Slayer.”
“I can’t believe-” Buffy started, but cut herself off with a shake of her head. “What does this have to do with Link?”
“That’s where it gets interesting.” He waved them forward towards the dais. “This is where she was strapped down.” He looked at Buffy. “Where is the source of her power?”
Buffy dug through her memory of a scene she had tried to forget for more than a decade. The power of darkness shoved into a girl. “From there,” she pointed to a small outlet where a stone lay split down the center. The stone appeared out of place, a completely different type to the native stones around it.
Link glanced at Buffy, her wide hazel eyes were fixed on the split stone as they approached it. Her breath seemed to get caught in her chest. He gazed at what had split the stone, or more likely, what had been cut from the stone.
A sword.
The sword tip was still buried in one side of the stone. And though he could not feel its power, he knew this was the Master Sword. It was tainted by age and grime, but it was his.
“The Slayer powers came from that?” Buffy whispered.
“The Master Sword was imbued with the powers of good, the divine will of the Goddess, Hylia,” Link told them. “The Sword was meant to be able to banish evil and protect the land.”
“It has,” Xander said softly, startling Link and Buffy.
They both looked at him in confusion.
“If the Master Sword is the source of power for the Slayer line…” he glanced at Buffy waiting for her.
“Then…” she started carefully, “the powers of the Sword made Sineya…and passed on to the next Slayer and the next…”
Link frowned. “The Master Sword exists in you.”
“That’s why you woke when I touched you.”
“It’s why I understand this world, the knowledge from the Sword passed to me…thru you”
