Despite the tension of earlier in the day, and the confrontations waiting to happen afterword among the members of the Wayne family and associates, they all had their “socialite” masks firmly in place.
Buffy stood with a group of people listening to their chatter about things she could care less about, but not by much. She was mostly listening to glean enough information to blend in with Gotham society.
Three weeks ago, she'd been battling a demon in Hong Kong and killed it in Hong Kong. Except the Hong Kong in which she killed it was not the one she started in. That had become apparent when she immediately collapsed and only woke up to find herself facing someone in costume.
Though the woman didn't speak until they were in a run-down apartment, she did eventually inform Buffy that she and the monster had entered from what appeared to be a portal. Buffy had nodded, too exhausted to do anything else at the moment and promptly fell unconscious.
When she next woke, the costumed woman was still watching her and she could tell time had passed since she could identify the early morning light. Stretching, her body was slightly stiff from the fight, but she could tell most of the injuries were well on their way to being healed.
“Meta?” the woman asked.
Buffy blinked at her. “What?”
“Are you Meta?”
“I don't know what that is.”
“Special powers? Gene?” the woman seemed to struggle with the words.
“Special powers, yes. Genetic, no,” Buffy returned, feeling she was probably giving away too much, but needing help. “Is there a magic user of some sort who could help me get back to my world?”
The other woman nodded.
Three days later she and Cass had been on a plane to the US. Buffy had shared as much as she felt she could or should, letting Cass (and whomever Cass told) know she was from a world where magic, demons and vampires were real, that she was mystically endowed with strength, speed and enhanced healing as well as a sensitivity to the mystical. She gave estimates of her strength and speed, admitting it had been years since she had done any sort of formal testing.
Unfortunately, she got little in return, but understood early on that Cass had difficulty with words and speaking. When she spotted the books in the other woman's apartment, Buffy had asked if she could help. Given the number of new slayers, all of the Scoobies had developed skills in helping others learn English as well as Scoobie dialect. When she figured out that Cass seemed to understand body language better than explanations, Buffy used that as much as she could to help her understand. They didn't make a lot of progress, but they made some.
When they arrived in Gotham, she'd been brought to a place called the “Batcave” and then brought to another place called the “Watchtower” where, apparently, there were all sorts of scientific instruments that might get her back to her home world. After all, she wasn't their first interdimentional traveler.
They'd gotten as far as figuring out which world she was from. Before they could begin on the proper calculations and calibrations, though, a Dr. Fate had showed up. Apparently he was the head mystical guru on this Earth. And, not entirely surprisingly to Buffy, informed them that Buffy could not return to her world. There had been an imbalance and the solution was for her to be sent away and she would need to create a new life in this world.
Normal drama ensued and after discovering she wasn't as strong or fast as most metas and her type of supernatural didn't exist in this world, she was still searching for her place. Cass had decided to keep Buffy with her and Batman - who she now knew was Bruce Wayne, a billionaire businessman - had eventually agreed. It had led her to meeting the rest of those associated with Batman and Black Bat.
There were still a lot of questions, a lot for her to process and a life for her to create.
Of course, currently she was standing within sight of most of the rest of the Wayne family and associates.
That, of course, meant that something had to go haywire.
She felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Something she'd only felt in the presence of this world's magic. Looking up she caught Tim's eye and tipped her head in the direction it felt strongest. She then smiled and excused herself, making eye contact with Cass and stealing Damian away from where he was moping near the door. Once they were outside the room, she closed her eyes and focused on the feeling, ignoring the questions around her. The feeling was more intense down by the library.
Opening her eyes, she said, “There's magic building in the library, or somewhere near there. A lot of it.”
“Let's see what's going on,” Tim stated.
“I'll let the others know,” offered Stephanie who had slipped out after Tim. Jason, Bruce and Dick would need a few extra minutes to extract themselves.
Just then Buffy felt like someone had pushed against her chest and gasped. “I don't think we have time,” she advised, taking off for the library, most of the others hot on her heels.
As she burst through the library doors, she paused only a moment to take in the tear in the air three feet above the ground, before her attention was drawn to the, for lack of a better term, ninja pouring out. Moving forward, she began engaging.
The fighting was fairly intense and between her dress, heels and the limited space in the room, it wasn't a pretty fight, but eventually all of the ninja were laying on the floor unconscious or unable to move.
Looking around she noticed the tear in the air had disappeared and one unexpected person standing in the room. The costume she was wearing was obviously related to the various bat-related costumes, but a design none had seen before.
“I’m from the future along with these, guys,” the woman said quickly.
“Our future?” Steph asked.
“Yep. You all remember this happening, Grammy Steph, and warned me about it.”
“Grammy Steph?” the woman in question squeaked, eyes going wide.
“Since you know our names and you remember this, what’s your name?” Dick asked.
“That would be too many spoilers,” she replied, shooting them all a sunny grin. “I will say that you, Grampy R, need to get together with Grammy B sooner rather than later. She’ll be a huge help to you and stop a lot of things that shouldn’t happen. Since you two are not big on surprises, I believe a week away on an island beach has been mentioned more than once. As for you Grammy Steph, not telling who you married since I didn’t before… er… now… um… I hate time travel verbs. Anyway, you always say you were glad you didn’t know ahead of time.”
“Do you need our help to return?” Bruce asked, moving things away from the personal, uncomfortable with the thought that if Dick, Stephanie and Buffy were grandparents, he was most likely dead. That, like everything else, could be dealt with later. He just managed to brace himself as the young woman launched herself at him and wrapped him in a hug. It was something that hadn’t happened in years, not since Dick was little.
“GGB,” she said softly, squeezing tightly before letting go.
“GGB?” Tim murmured to Jason who shrugged.
“Great Grandpa Bruce.”
Buffy, Dick and the stranger all said at once causing looks to be exchanged among the others.
“And, no. I don’t need help. Another rift should be opening at any time now.” As if on queue, the rift opened. “Well, that’s me. A little help tossing these guys back through?”
The family quickly worked to remove all of the unconscious forms from the library, just before she left, their visitor from the future turned to look at them one last time. “It’s not going to be easy, but every single one of you need to open your hearts to love. You’re family. We’re family. And family makes everything better.” Turning to look directly at Jason, she added, “That goes double for you Jason Todd. It doesn’t make you weak. Forgiveness and family make you strong. Gotta go. See you in… um… a lot of years.”
When she disappeared through the rift it closed, leaving a stunned group behind.
“So, any idea which island you’re going to?” Steph asked, breaking the silence that had settled on the room.
Dick and Buffy shot a look at each other and both flushed pink.
“We have a house full of guests to get back to,” Bruce said, not willing to deal with the information right now.
“Right,” Tim said, turning to leave, Jason, Damian, Stephanie and Cass leaving with him. Dick followed behind.
Bruce stopped Buffy, placing a hand on her shoulder. She turned, a questioning look on her face. “Just because someone claiming to be your descendant says some things from our supposed future doesn’t mean it’s real, nor does it mean that I believe it.”
Buffy nodded. “Trust needs to be earned.”
“It does,” Bruce agreed. He then took a deep breath. “I believe you’ve earned it.”
Buffy gasped slightly at the words and then smiled up at him. Moving to slip an arm through his, she asked, “Does that mean you’ll tell me good blackmail stories about Dick growing up?”
Bruce laughed, a genuine laugh. “That we’ll have to wait and see.”
“Sounds good.”
