Willow held on to the handle as the helicopter swerved to get them as close to the ground as possible. The large headphones over her ears barely numbed the unbelievable noise from the flight. She really didn’t want to be in the air, but it was necessary.

The International Watchers Council had been watching the events of Metropolis and Gotham for over two years. However, they had noticed over the last few months more worrying signs.

The Gotham vigilante Batman had gone off the deep end. He had marked his victims and been more violent than was strictly necessary. And they had no idea what madman was under the mask.

There was also the Man of Steel who was based out of Metropolis. He had received exceedingly worse press. Most recently it felt like he was being set up.

“Metropolis or Gotham?” the pilot shouted through the com system.

Willow looked at the most recent activity for Superman. “He’s headed to Gotham,” she yelled. “How close can you get me?”

The pilot looked at the radar. “You may have to rappel down. But I should be able to get you within a few blocks.”

Willow detached herself from the rope and signaled the pilot he could leave. As she watched him ascend, she removed the harness she wore. Looking around she could sense more than see the Kryptonian.

Dashing through the city she dodged cars and debris. They had been trying for months to predict what either of these men would do, but they had realized too late the events were being manipulated by an outside force to pit them against each other. Now it seemed the outside force would get what it wanted.

Willow skidded to a stop outside of an old building.

“Goddess, hear me,” she prayed as she headed inside, “I know not what I walk into but I pray for strength to do what’s right and light to see my way through.” She raised her left hand, a small ball of light cast from the center of it.

The building shook around her as the sound of destruction became nearly too close. She crept around until she saw them. The Batman was not what she expected, instead of a simple cape and suit, he was dressed in large metal armor pieces. The faceplate was missing a section.

She reached out her powers and separated the two powerful beings. She stared at them as they stared, immobilized, back at her.

“Stop,” Willow demanded as they were fighting her magic. “This has to stop.”

“Who are you?” the Batman demanded in a deep voice that commanded authority.

“My name is Willow,” she told them. “I’ve been following your exploits for the last few months. I figured out too late you were being pitted against each other.”

“Luthor!” Superman coughed.

Her eyes widened in surprise. “I hadn’t found out who was doing it. How do you know?”

“He has Martha.”

For the first time since she had made her presence known, the Batman stopped fighting her magic.

“What did you say?”

“Martha,” Superman wheezed. “We have to save Martha.”

“It’s his mother,” Willow explained as Superman pushed the thoughts at her. “Luthor has her. We need to save her.”

“Let us out,” the Batman demanded.

She did because they had both turned their attention to the situation at hand and were no longer bent on destroying each other.

It was only a few minutes before they were headed off in different directions. Willow pulled out her phone as she watched Superman skim the bay on his way to stop Luthor.

“Hey. I’ve wrangled the two of them. They are working together for now.” She sighed. “They left me behind. There were a few more moving pieces than I was aware of. I need a couple of things. Everything you can get me on Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne and dig up whatever you can on a small town - Smallville.” She nodded. “I’m on the ground, I’ll monitor the situation.”

Willow sighed and ended the call. She pulled up her news app and listened for news. “Please let it be good news.”
