Eureka
Once they were outside, Allison went to her vehicle and grabbed a phone from a lockbox in the trunk. “This is a secure phone that you can use to call the President. Just be sure to mention that you got it from me, alright?” she asked.
“Got it,” Buffy answered. “I’d better get a move on so there’s less of a chance that peole will find out what SARAH’s done. Oh, hey…do you have some paper and a pen or pencil? I might have to write out some stuff on the way.”
Allison retrieved the items then wished Buffy luck.
After Buffy left the limits of Eureka/Global Dynamics, SARAH called the phone and told her, “I have deactivated the GPS locator and the other tracking software that Global Dynamics uses on their phones. It wouldn’t be prudent for them to discover the location of this other organization. I have also programmed the phone number for the President into speed dial 1. You will have to identify yourself and Sunnydale to make it past the operator.”
Buffy thought it was a little amusing that an AI would try to protect the location and identity of another secret government project from her/its creators. That actually was a little telling. What kind of people ran that town/company? Something to worry about later. She pressed the speed dial button and waited.
When the other person picked up, Buffy said, “My name is Buffy Summer formerly of Sunnydale, California, and I need to speak to the President, please. Oh, and I’m calling from a secure phone given to me by Allison Blake of Eureka, Oregon.”
“Please hold,” the androgynous voice at the other end said. Almost two minutes later, the voice came back and added, “One moment while I transfer your call.”
Buffy listened to some clicking sounds before she heard the familiar voice of President Henry Hayes. “Miss Summers, you have impeccable timing. I was hoping to speak to you concerning your heroic actions for the past several years, but now I find myself in a position where I could use your particular perspective on a situation.”
“Not to be rude, sir, because you seem like a decent guy for a politician, but I was actually calling to ask for a favor from you,” Buffy interjected. Then she winced at her Cordelia-esque comment about politicians.
To her relief, Hayes just chuckled. “Well then, it appears we both have something the other wants. Hopefully, we can reach an agreement so we’re both happy with the outcome. I would prefer to discuss this face to face, so if you can make your way to the nearest military base with an airport, I will arrange for transportation to bring you here. I’ll have an aide text you the directions. You have just left Eureka, correct?”
“Yes, sir. I appreciate that, sir,” Buffy said, trying desperately to catch up with the conversation. She hoped it would be this easy to get what she needed for SARAH from the secret organization…assuming she could find out who they were and what they did.
Right after she hung up with the President, SARAH sent her a message summarizing what she knew about the project she needed to go see. Then Buffy got the directions that told her where to go for a plane ride.
White House
A couple hours later, she was escorted into the Oval Office by a couple Secret Service agents.
“Welcome, Miss Summers. Please have a seat. Can I get you anything?” President Hayes asked as he poured himself a drink.
“A diet Coke would be nice, if you have it,” she answered uncertainly.
He didn’t have it in the room, but used his intercom to request that one of the secretaries outside let in the steward when he arrived with one.
“While we wait, why don’t we break the ice telling each other what we need from the other,” he suggested. “Since you called me, you can go first.”
“Thank you, sir,” Buffy said before giving a quick briefing of her favor exchange so far, leading up to her current situation. “…and once I finished speaking to you earlier, SARAH told me about the project she felt had the best chance of having something that could provide her companionship. She couldn’t tell me its name, but said it’s based in Colorado Springs--”
“It’s the SGC,” Hayes interrupted. “Which is a remarkable coincidence because they are what I need a favor from you for. It’s serendipitous, wouldn’t you say?”
“What’s the SGC?” she asked, ignoring what she guessed was a rhetorical comment.
There was a knock at the door and Hayes waited until after the steward left Buffy’s drink before answering, “Stargate Command. They travel to other worlds and interact with alien races. Some are good races and others are quite bad.”
Buffy suddenly wished she had what was in the President’s glass. “Aliens?!” she gasped, “No offense, sir, but how could I possibly help you with that? Are they demonic somehow?”
Hayes was taken aback by that question; he hadn’t considered that before. “I guess I don’t know that. My thought was that very few people could hope to understand the dangers the SGC personnel face on a day-to-day basis, but you are one of those people. You have been in unique situations that boggle the mind, yet are still around to protect the world. I assume you’ve had your share of failures as well as successes, correct?” he asked.
“Unfortunately,” she admitted. “How does that help?”
“You would understand better than anyone whether they are capable of doing their jobs after several years of successes and failures,” Hayes explained. “I don’t think there is anyone else who could give me an accurate assessment better than you. I have heard the arguments from both sides, but I’d like your opinion as well.”
“Do I have time to finish my current crisis first?” Buffy asked.
“I will do my best to get you what you need right away, but they are in the midst of their own crisis as well, so I may need you to delegate the oversight of the favors to somebody else while you evaluate them.”
“SARAH won’t trust anyone but me bringing back her companion,” Buffy warned.
Hayes concurred with that assessment, “I agree, but once that is resolved, can somebody else cover your crisis?”
She shrugged, “I guess they’ll have to.”
A/N: So I didn’t have to try and figure out where she needed to go, I kept that info off-screen.
