Summary: "The world was on the brink of destruction."
The world was on the brink of destruction. Xander had flown back from Scotland three weeks ago with the warning of another apocalypse and he had tracked down and sent several Hunters her way. For her part, she had divvied up the warriors at her disposal and sent them where they were most needed. Destruction was an easy thing to navigate when it came in a form you were prepared for.
She had not prepared for this.
The cemetery surrounding her was familiar. The sister beside her and the reformed Slayer at her back were also expected. Even the two Hunters on her other side, brothers, provided a level of comfort she had not thought possible upon meeting them. No, what had caused her to stop-and stop suddenly-was the appearance of her mother. She hadn’t prepared for it. Hadn’t even thought it possible. Dawn softly cried out in surprise and grief but Buffy’s hand shot out and kept her rooted to the spot. Other figures began to appear in the distance and she narrowed her eyes at the figure before them.
“Who are you?”
Joyce Summers tilted her head and smiled softly. “It’s been nearly ten years and you both have grown so much! I have watched you and I couldn’t be prouder of the women you have become!” Faith circled around her and reached out to touch. Her hand passed through and Joyce smiled sadly. I’m not back, Buffy, I can never come back. My time has passed. But when the veils between the worlds were torn, I saw the opportunity to come back and warn you.”
“You should be warning my sons.”
She felt, rather than saw, the Hunters stiffen. The ruggedly handsome man that had appeared beside Joyce gruffly nodded toward them.
“I don’t see what difference it makes,” Joyce argued. “They’re just going to have to end up telling Buffy anyway. Might as well go straight to the top.”
“My sons have stopped an apocalypse or two-they know what they’re doing.”
Joyce threw her hands up in frustration and rolled her eyes. “You are insufferab-“
“I’m sure whatever retort you had prepared was witty and scathing but do you think the two of you could just stop for a moment!” Sam Winchester glanced between the two. “I don’t know if either of you are real but, in case you are, do you suppose you could pass along this important information sooner rather than later?”
His father nodded and approached him. “The veils have been torn. They’re gonna need you, Sam. You are one of the only people who can see the veils without being lured toward them. You need to find one and shut it. The rest should follow.”
“And you are the only one that can close them, Dawn. Because of who you were, you can control the magic within you and use it to seal the veils. But that magic is a part of who you are-you cannot let it pull you in. If you do, you will be pulled apart and spread across the veils.”
“But no pressure…” Dawn mumbled.
“You don’t need to worry,” John Winchester consoled. “I have another son. Best damn Hunter in the world. He’ll keep the two of you safe.”
John nodded at Dean and Dean nodded back.
“Well, I have another daughter!” Joyce boasted. “Best Slayer in the world. She’ll keep your son safe.”
Buffy laughed. There were two posturing parents standing before her in a graveyard. The world was on the brink of destruction and it seemed as though they were the only ones that could stop it. She wasn’t prepared for any of it and, yet, it didn’t seem to matter.
She alone couldn’t do it but together they would.
