Martha Jones stared at the people sitting around the table.

She had seen so much during her time with The Doctor and and then with UNIT, that she thought she had seen it all.

Obviously she had been mistaken.

"Doctor Jones," Mr Giles - Rupert - began. "I must apologise again for the means by which you arrived and please be reassured, you are not a prisoner."

She tried not to snort. Having the redhead teleport inside UNIT and then teleport Martha out, without a single word, made it a little hard for her to believe that she hadn't been kidnapped.

"I'm afraid Willow has been quite distraught since Xander disappeared and she's not thinking clearly."

"It was taking too long, Giles, and I wasn't going to waste time trying to contact Dr Jones through official channels," Willow said, her face cold with anger. "Those angel things made him and Melody disappear and we need to find them."

Martha sat up straight at the words. "Angels?"

A young brunette, Rupert introduced as Dawn, nodded. "Statues of angels, they took our friends. We need to know what the angels have done with them so we can get them back. We were told you could help."

"Weeping Angels," Martha said.

"So you do know what they are?" Willow asked, looking relieved.

Martha's heart went out to the young woman. Now that she understood, it was clear that she was distraught, desperate. Although, how she was able to teleport was something Martha really wanted to know, but right now that wasn't the main priority.

"How can we get our friends back?" Buffy asked.

"I'm sorry, but you can't."

The room, strangely, went deathly still and the hairs on the back of her arms and neck stood up.

"What?" Willow asked, very slowly.

"The Weeping Angels, they're... not from this world." Normally, Martha wouldn't tell people the truth like this, but there was definitely something otherworldly about this group, so she made the judgment call. "My friend, the Doctor, called them the Lonely Assassins. They are predators that don't kill their victims, what they do is send them back in time, and then feed off the potential energy of the years your friends would have lived in this time. You can't kill them."

"So Xander is trapped back in time?"

She nods. "And if he was touched by the same angel as your other friend, Melody, they will be in the same time. If a different angel touched him, they won't be."

"Why can't we kill them?" Buffy demanded. "Surely they have a weakness?"

Martha nodded. "They do, when you look at them they become quantum locked and turned into stone. The problem is, you can't kill stone. After the first time I encountered the angels, I mentioned to the doctor that you can blow up stone, but he pointed out that by the we tried to find something to blow them up they would be gone."

A smile crept on Buffy's face, and Martha couldn't call it anything except predatory. "Have you ever heard of a Slayer, Doctor Jones?"

Martha thought for a moment, then shook her head. She was fairly certain the Doctor never mentioned anything called a Slayer.

"Trust me when I say that the fact they're stone doesn't mean they can escape me."
