Part XIV

“NYPD,” Kevin said, flashing his badge at the kid behind the desk and feeling a pang of guilt for misusing it like that. “What can you tell us about who’s staying in room…”

“315,” Castle supplied.

The kid nodded, “Dude with the eyepatch. Knew he was shady as fuck.”

“Eyepatch?”

“Yeah, dark haired guy with a patch - checked in with two hot chicks. They’re in the rooms on either side of him. 313 and 317.”

“Names?”

After some tapping in the computer a minute, he answered. “Xander Harris, Dawn Summers and Kennedy-“

“Dawn Summers?” Castle interrupted, looking excited again.

“Do you know if they’re in?” Kevin asked.

He shook his head. “Nah, all three left about half an hour ago.”

“Well, I guess we’ll come back then. Thank you for your time. And if you could keep this between us that would really help the investigation.”

“Sure,” the kid nodded eagerly. “Wouldn’t want them skipping out before you got to grill them.”

Castle looked amused by the kid’s excitement, but it quickly soured into disappointment as Kevin led him outside.

“We’re not really leaving, are we?”

“No,” Kevin said, looping around to the alley and opening the service entrance door.

“Oh! Are we going to cut the power to the building?” Castle asked, bouncing in the door behind Kevin like an excited puppy.

“No,” Kevin answered with an eye roll as he pulled his lock picking kit from the inside pocket of his jacket.

“That’s not going to work here - they have those magnetic card readers.”

“I know that,” Kevin huffed. Seriously, what kind of detective did Castle think he was?

“See, I bet you’re wishing we had that- Hey!”

Castle gaped at the little black box Kevin waved at him. Castle’s own little EMP that they’d taken from him months back when investigating a series of murders and hotel break ins.

“I never even got to use that! You said we couldn’t just break into rooms, we needed a warrant and cause and blah, blah, blah. But suddenly it’s okay for you to use on this case.”

“Oh, I’m not going to use it. You are,” he answered as they got in the elevator “Also, not an official case.”

“I see how it is,” Castle said, trying to look annoyed but failing miserably as his glee at finally getting to use the little device shined through.

Kevin handed it over to him as the elevator dinged on the third floor. Castle followed him out while turning the little box slowly in his hands.

“You do know how to use that, right?” Kevin asked as they stopping in front of 315.

“Uh, yeah, sure, you just-“

After a minute of Castle mumbling as he squatted in front of the door, Kevin was getting anxious.

“Want to move it along a little there, Castle? We’re not exactly inconspicuous.”

“Well, thanks to a certain someone, I never got to try it out. Thing didn’t come with a manual, I’m trying to remember…”

Castle fiddled with it for another minute then just sat back on his heels and looked at it.

“Well?”

“I think that was it, but I thought it would make a noise or something. Think it’s like a dog whistle and we just can’t hear it working?”

“For the love of- Never mind, I’ll just get a key from-“

Castle tried the handle and it opened easily.

“Did that actually work or was it open the whole time?”

“We’re going to go with ‘it worked’.”

Kevin flicked on the light and stepped into the room. It was perfectly neat, nothing out of place other than a duffle in a corner and an empty peanut bag about a foot away from the trash can.

“You know, a gypsy in Prague told me I’d be killed by a pirate one day,” Castle said, pulling open drawers.

“Say what?”

“Yep,” he nodded and went to inspect the bathroom. “I was hoping for more of a peg legged, hook handed, ‘grrr, argh’ type pirate. But I guess a shady guy with an eyepatch is better than a skinny Somalian…”

“You’re not going to get killed by this guy,” Kevin said rolling his eyes as he unzipped the duffle.

Honestly, though he was sure Javi and Beckett would brush it off as easily as Kevin just did out loud, he was a little disturbed by that revelation. Gypsy’s knew their stuff, right?

“Nothing in there,” Castle said, coming out of the bathroom. “Let’s check the sister’s room. What do you think about her being here? Think she’s in on it? Oh, maybe she and Slaughter are working together! Did you say they had an inheritance together? Maybe she gets it all if Buffy gets knocked off. Or maybe Slaughter has nefarious plans for her, too. Kill off both the sisters and steal the money for himself.”

“Did you really just use the word nefarious in real life, dude?” Kevin snorted, as they headed for the door.

Just as he was about to open it though, it swung open. The guy with the eyepatch blinked at them in confusion, two girls nearly bumping into his back from his sudden halt into the room.

“Uh, you don’t look like room service,” he said.

Then his eyes slid over Kevin to Castle and Kevin’s stomach dropped. Shock turned murderous in seconds and the guy shoved him and dove at Castle.

He was recovering his footing and reaching for his gun when one of the girls barreled into him, driving him to the carpet in a surprising show of strength. As he struggled against his assailant he couldn’t help but worry that maybe the gypsy had been right…
