Summary: He doesn't like that Dawn Summers doesn't trust him.
Harry didn't realise how much he had taken his fame for granted. He isn't talking about using his fame to further himself, or getting the best table in a restaurant. He actually hates his fame, and rarely uses it for anything. No, Harry is talking about being used to everyone knowing who he is, and knowing that he's one of the good guys.
He doesn't like that Dawn Summers doesn't trust him.
Harry hasn't worked this hard to get someone - who isn't a dark witch or wizard - to trust him. He actually has to work at trying to gain Dawn's trust and so far he doesn't think he's doing a very good job.
"How did you go?" Harry asks anxiously, as soon as Hermione and Ron step through the floo.
George and Bill are here with him, both equally interested in finding out how Hermione went. Neville is guarding Dawn.
Hermione gives him a tight smile. "Well, I gave her the books and removed the surveillance charms."
"Did she say anything?"
"No," Hermione says, taking a seat. "To be honest, I don't think she's all that impressed with us at the moment. I'm not even sure she's going to believe what she reads in the books, not if the look she gave them was anything to go by."
"So she didn't say anything?"
"No, she just followed me around the house with her sword while I removed the charms." Hermione makes a face. "I think she was annoyed with how many charms we placed on the house. I tried to reassure her that no one would have seen anything, but she just rolled her eyes."
Harry winces. "So she trusts us even less now?"
George laughs. "Wouldn't you? If you're right, and she's here because someone tried to use her before, then she probably thinks we're going to do the same thing."
"She wouldn't be wrong," Bill comments. "I don't mean that we would use her gifts. What I mean is that the people who would want to use her gifts wouldn't be limited to just dark witches and wizards. Imagine if she had been around during the war. Do you think Dumbledore would have let her skills go to waste? If this gets out, every witch and wizard will be scrambling to take advantage of her. Think about it, there's no tomb, safe or home that would be hidden from her."
Harry shudders at the thought. "That's why we have to be careful. Kingsley knows, and he's made sure not to put anything about her in writing." But Harry still feels uncomfortable about the fact that he knows. Harry had told him about Dawn right after she had found his house, and the calculating look in his eyes had made Harry nervous.
"I still think there's more to this than we know," Hermione says. "I know that she probably doesn't do magic, because whoever hurt her probably put a trace on her want, but I don't understand why she just doesn't by a new one. Or at the very least hire someone to put wards around Sarah's house. There's nothing protecting that house except muggle weapons."
"Hermione's right," Ron agrees. "There are just too many things that don't make sense. First Harry's tracking charm doesn't work on her, but it works on Sarah fine. Second, she doesn't use magic for anything. Okay, maybe she has a tracking charm on her wand, but not once since we've been watching her has she gone for her wand for anything. Not even when Sarah woke up that night screaming. Neville said that she didn't go for her wand, but she grabbed her sword. I know if I was being hunted like that, I would still go for my wand just in case they found me. You would use it to escape, but she didn't even have it out that night she was counting her weapons."
"As much as it scares me to agree with Ron, he's right," Bill says, winking at his youngest brother. "I also think it's a little strange that she doesn't know you. I've worked with American Curse-Breakers and they know who you are, they know who Hermione and Ron are even. All of the magical papers in America followed what was happening with Voldemort. In fact, they were talking about getting involved if the Boy-Who-Lived failed to kill him. The fact that she doesn't know who any of you are, makes me wonder what we're missing."
"There's a lot that doesn't make sense about our American friend," George says.
"And I suspect the only way we're going to get any answers is by gaining Dawn's trust," Harry says. "Maybe the books will help her open up a little."
Hermione doesn't look convinced. "I think it's going to take a little more than that."
Harry sighs in frustration. As much as he hates to admit it, Hermione has a point.
They had had no choice but to watch Dawn, to make sure she wasn't someone dangerous, but the assurance had come at a price.
