Summary: As Xander would say, she's up poop stream without a paddle.
What Dawn hates he most about being a trans-dimensional refugee is that she really is on her own.
Even though she’s been here a while, it’s still something she can’t get used to. She realises now how lucky she was in Sunnydale, even though at times it didn’t feel like it. Dawn doesn’t like the fact that she’s an eighteen year old girl and she has no resources. She has no history, no money, no sister and no kick ass Scoobies to back her up.
As Xander would say, she's up poop stream without a paddle.
Dawn sighs and surveys the sight before her. She’s in her bedroom, and scattered on the floor is everything she owns. When she came into this dimension, she had nothing except the clothes she on her back, the amulet that brought her here, her purse - which only contained twelve dollars and her Sunnydale High ID - and her short sword.
Had she known when she activated Willow’s 'use only as an absolute last resort, like you’re going to die if you don’t' amulet that it would send her to an alternate dimension, she would have taken more with her when she was out with Giles and the Potentials.
Though, to be fair, Dawn’s almost positive the amulet was supposed to transport her to a 'safe haven' - not to another dimension. Unless, of course, this dimension was the safe haven... then it did a bang up job!
She sighs again and shakes her head, forcing herself to focus on the present and not the past. She hasn’t accumulated much since she’s been here. She has a few more item of clothing, a bit of money from working at Sarah’s coffee shop, but nothing worth writing home about.
And nothing that can stop Harry Potter if he decides to come looking for her.
She’s managed to piece together enough information from their short conversation to figure out that there’s obviously magic in this dimension and that Harry Potter and the dudes on brooms have it. She’s also figured out that Harry probably wasn’t lying when he said he wasn’t going to hurt her. After all, he let both her and Sarah walk away and hasn’t hurt - or stalked - either one of them in the seven days since.
So, given the fact that Dawn has next to no resources in this dimension and that Harry Potter does… she knows she has to make a choice.
To trust or not to trust.
She's tempted to make a list of 'pros and cons', like Willow had taught her, but, well, she doesn't think it would do her any good. She's out gunned and out classed. Obviously, the magic in this world is pretty potent if it can hide houses and allow people to fly brooms... and she has nothing to combat that. Oh, she knows spells, she memorised a few from Willow's books, but so far Dawn and the magic in this dimension haven't been able to get along. She's tried a few basic spells - a location spell and a communication spell - and she got nothing in return. Literally nothing, not even the flicker of a candle.
The only thing she can do, apparently, is see through wards. While Dawn doesn't know much about this dimension, what she knows about magic tells her that it's a talent that's not of the good.
Not for her, anyway.
If Dawn had at least one of the Scoobies with her, or if she had more than $220 in her purse, she wouldn’t even consider what she’s actually considering. It’s dangerous, possibly even stupid but, unless she wants to be stuck in this dimension, away from everything and everyone she loves, she has to take a risk.
After all, if Harry has access to magic, then maybe, maybe he can help her find a way home. After she's vetted - thoroughly vetted - him of course. She’s desperate, but she’s not stupid.
The fact that no one has kidnapped her is a huge check in the 'pro-Harry' column.
Grabbing her trusty sword and purse, Dawn jumps to her feet and turns to leave her room. Sarah won’t mind her borrowing the car, and she’s fairly certain she remembers the way to Harry’s house. While it’s not ideal, she can go there and drop a note in his letter box asking him to meet.
Dawn only make it to the door when she hears a light tapping at her window. Slowly, almost nervously, she turns towards the window. Like when she first saw Harry and his friends flying above his house, it takes Dawn’s brain a moment to process what she’s seeing. This time, however, Dawn decides to close her eyes and count to ten before reopening them.
When she sees the grey and white owl is still on her windowsill, carrying what looks like a letter, she realises that she hasn’t gone insane.
She doesn’t hesitate, much, before opening the window. There’s only one person who could be sending this to her and she had been just about to go to his house. She takes the letter from the owl and is a little surprised when it fluttered into her room and makes itself at home on her dresser.
“Okay…” Dawn stares at the owl for another moment before opening the letter.
Ms Summers
I was hoping we could talk. You can either come to my house tomorrow, at noon, or if you are more comfortable meeting on neutral territory, let me know a time and place you would like to meet.
Pigwidgeon will wait for a reply.
Sincerely
Harry Potter
Dawn stares at the letter in her hands and then quickly grabs a pen and writes her reply.
As she watches Pigwidgeon fly away with her reply, she silently prays she just took the first step towards heading home… not the first step to something else.
