He was sleeping when she came into the room. All banged up and bruised, Lietenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell didn’t look like much. Then again, that could be said of herself. Of Xander and definitely of deceptive looking Buffy. None of them looked like heroes - but she supposed they all were.

Willow sat gingerly in the chair next to the bed, worrying her lower lip with her teeth. She wanted to say some things to him, to this man that had done so much to save her husband and her new friends. It didn’t matter that said husband was now out of her reach, in stasis. He was alive and that was what counted. The last words they’d said to one another - in anger - wouldn’t be their absolute last words. Once the Asgard came to help, Jack would be just fine.

And that was due in large part to Mitchell. His friends said he liked to be called ‘Cam’. His friends said a lot of things about him, all glowing.

She believed them.

He’d saved Jack and Daniel and Sam and Teal’c with his heroic efforts. Just one of many that had flown that day down in Antarctica. Oh, how he had shone.

The doctors said that he would be alright and she believed them. One thing everyone said about Cameron Mitchell - he was a fighter.

“Thank you,” she whispered, when it was obvious that he wasn’t going to be waking any time soon. “I’m sure Jack’ll come say it for himself, you know, when he can - but I’m saying it now for him and me, too. I’m his wife, by the way. Hi, nice to meet you.”

She sniffled.

“If he’d died - if they’d been blown out of the sky, then that day would’ve gone so, so different,” she said quietly. “And Jack and I… you see, we had a fight. A big old fight. I didn’t want him to do what he did. Take that knowledge into his head. I love him, you know. I didn’t want him to die. There had to be another way, I told him. Had to! And then… he did it anyway. He left me.”

Voice breaking, Willow shook her head. “And I can’t blame him. I wasn’t being rational, I’ve figured that out. I mean, the world had to come first. Not me. Not him. The world. Just like when Buffy and the rest of us would… Nevermind, you don’t need to know about that.”

This was silly, she was unloading on this guy and not only was he not awake to hear it, but he probably wouldn’t care, either. Well, all the more reason to tell him, then. The not being able to hear it part, anyway.

“But, you saved him. And now I get to say I’m sorry and hope that he forgives me. Well, you know - when the Asgard get their little grey butts here to fix him. I hope that’s soon.”

She stood and crossed to the bed, patting his hand once before squeezing it.

”Thanks for listening. And thank you for, you know, being a hero. Hope we get to meet again.”

As she left the room, Cameron’s eyes fluttered open just a slit. Red hair. Petite. Why did he have this overwhelming urge to say ‘it was nothing’?
