Summary: Death is her gift. Why is that so hard to accept?

Death Is Your Gift - Option 3

Buffy sat on the edge of her bed.

Ever since she and Giles had returned from her visionquest, which really felt more like a dream to her - a slayer dream since it made so little sense, but still, a dream - Buffy had been unable to find rest. The words and vision left her mind spinning. Yes, she'd clearly heard that “death is your gift”, but there was more that the first slayer said and she needed to figure out how that all factored in.

She was full of love.

Death was her gift.

Love. Give. Forgive.

The phrases from the slayer kept running through her mind as if trying to make sense, but not the kind she wanted to admit to herself.

The message was clear and, she knew she would eventually have to admit it to herself when she wasn't pretending the world was still good and her mother could make her fears go away. Her mother was gone and never before had she longed for the comfort of her mother's embrace.

“I'm not your mom, but I'll give you a hug,” a voice said, startling Buffy from her thoughts.

She sprang from her bed and turned to face the intruder. She knew better than to let her guard down, but this... person, for lack of a better term, was giving off more power vibes than Glory, even if she did look like one of those goth chicks around campus. “Who are you?”

The girl offered a bright smile. “I think if you calm down, you'll know.”

Buffy took a deep breath and let her body and mind calm. Her head tilted to the side and her eyes narrowed slightly as she evaluated the woman. She did know her, had seen her before and, now that she wasn't startled and was focusing on blocking some of the power, she had to admit that the power felt like a familiar friend. She looked into the eyes of the other woman and her stance instantly relaxed. There was no way for her to fight this one. “I know you. You're Death.”

The woman's smile brightened. “Got it in one.”

Suddenly Buffy felt her panic rise again. “I can't go yet. There's Glory...”

“I'm not here to take you now,” Death assured, the panicking young woman. “I'm here to talk to you. Dream sent me when he realized you might not figure things out in time.”

Buffy snorted. “Aren't you one of the Powers That Be? Why would you care?”

The smile disappeared from Death's face to be replaced with a sour expression. Buffy realized that it was, perhaps, not the wisest move she'd ever made to taunt Death.

“Those wanna-be posers? No, I'm one of the Endless. I'm sort of a pre-gift, you might say. I'm here to help you accept what you have to do.”

Buffy instantly deflated. She knew - had known for a while, what would happen, what Sineya meant, but she didn't want to admit it. “I won't be making it out of this, will I?”

Death sat on her bed and patted the spot beside her, waiting to respond until Buffy had taken a seat. “You will, one way or another, but you really don't have to be afraid.”

“It's suicide!”

“It's love!”

Shocked by the vehemence of the words from the Endless, Buffy pulled back.

Death sighed. “'Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.' Or, perhaps, a sister. You're full of love Buffy. Forgive those who have offended you, release your anger and resentment and let your love fill all of you. With what you're facing, you can't go into it with bitterness in your heart.”

Buffy felt tears welling in her eyes and didn't object when she felt the Endless wrap her in a hug. She knew Death was right, knew she what it would come down to, but she wasn't ready.

“But you will be,” Death whispered.

When Buffy pulled back to look at Death, the Endless was gone and she was once more alone in her room.

Standing, she finished getting ready for bed.

As she slipped between the covers, she thought she felt Death's presence again, only this time, she was comforted by it.

“She won't remember in the morning.”

Death shrugged at her brother. “But she will when the time is right.”
