Giles let his bag of papers that had been thrust upon him as he left the council office that evening fall to the floor. Buffy and Dawn with their husbands left on their honeymoons a couple of days ago and yesterday Giles had supervised as a moving company took all of the boxed out of their apartment.
Out of habit he turned on the record player as he walked by on his way into the kitchen. Reaching into some old clay jar he found Giles pulled out the name of a restaurant that offered delivery services. After calling and placing his dinner order he started the kettle of water heating. Looking at the calendar he made sure all the bills for the month had been paid.
When the doorbell rang Giles answered the door and stopped in startlement. “You’re not the delivery guy.”
“No. I’m Tony.” Tony Stark said.
“I ordered dinner but it hasn’t come yet. I still have some water hot enough for tea if you would like some.” Giles offered holding the door open. “Kitchen’s over there.”
Later after the food had been delivered and when Tony took the spare set of chopsticks and started taking bites of food Giles didn’t complain. “Why are you here Tony?”
“So I’m still working on a wedding gift for Cap and Banner. Since they’re all married and have wives I figured improve their homes.” Tony said smashing a fist onto a fortune cookie.
“Buffy said it was more like an apartment. Dawn would love a room for like an office or library and Buffy would love a room with a sign on the door saying ‘Buffy’ an empty room for her to do with whatever she wants.” Giles said prying open a fortune cookie.
“That’s a great idea, but I actually came over here to ask you something.”
“Oh, and what would that be?”
“Do you think we could get you all moved in before they get back? That is if you want to move into the tower. Your place would actually be the floor below Cap’s and two below Banners.” Tony asked looking at the table collecting every bit of his smashed cookie.
“I probably could but don’t you think they should be asked before I move in? Do you really think they would want an old stick in the mud in the same building when they are starting married lives? Would Steve and Bruce enjoy having a fake father-in-law so close?” Giles said not daring to hope that it really would work out so he could live in the tower but knowing the girls may choose to embrace their future and ties to the past would be allowed to slowly slip away. With other people running the council and with both of them pretty much retired they would be able to embrace a council free life. Giles was worried that their visits would get more and more infrequent until they exchanged the occasional phone call or email.
“All four of them have come to me and asked about getting a room for you in the tower. I want to surprise them with you already moved in to an full apartment of your own.” Tony said looking at Giles.
“They really want me there living so close to them?” Giles asked looking up at Tony.
“Them and me and Pepper and everyone. You’re their dad.”
“Thank you Tony. So very much.”
