“So you never did tell me why you started your killer Scooby Doo act,” Edward’s latest partner commented. Anita would be shocked that she wasn’t Death’s favorite playmate anymore.

Normally, he’d tell anyone who asked that question to go to hell; his reasons were his own. If he was feeling playful, he’d give them the bullshit sob story he made up years ago. Something about this woman had him telling her the truth.

“It was my mom,” he started with a rare show of affection. “Before the vamps went legal, she hunted them. Sometimes I think she’s why they went legal. When I was young, she explained that vamps were different where she came from. Some ways were good, some ways were worse.

“For example, she was…not okay with it, but maybe not too judgmental about vamps who fed on willing people without killing them. She insisted that they had to be completely willing, though. If she caught a vamp using its rolling power, she’d kill it. And she could always tell…much to their shock.

“The other non-human monsters that hurt humans she didn’t have trouble killing, either. Her problem was the weres. They were her blind spot. They were different from ‘back home’, too. Most of the time, when she caught one causing trouble, she left them for the authorities - sometimes in one piece, other times, not so much. They were all warned that if they continued, she’d be back and be more lethal next time.

“That attitude eventually caught up to her. One of the monsters she had locked up decided to get a little revenge on her. He tracked her to where we lived.”

Edward’s breathing grew shallow as he fell into his memories. “He killed my dad immediately, but kept her alive for days. He forced me to watch as he tortured her. One day, he stepped out of the room for food or something, and she dragged herself across the room to cut me loose. I think she expected me to run away.

“Instead, I found one of her guns loaded with silver bullets that she thought was out of my reach. When he came back into the room, he was surprised to find that she could move on her own, much less across the room.” The familiar look of Death came into Edward’s features at that point. “Then he was surprised that he was dying. I emptied the whole magazine into him…all fifteen bullets.”

“My humanity might have survived intact if she had lived, but her wounds were too great for even her healing to take care of that time. When she died, so did that part of me that had compassion. I hope that even if she doesn’t approve of what I’ve become, she wouldn’t be completely disappointed in me. But I had to become the most feared hunter; I owed her and the monsters like him that.”

While he caught his breath, Edward wondered again why he opened up so much to this woman. Even though she was incredibly beautiful, he really wasn’t attracted to her…as strange as that sounded. She felt like the big sister he never had.

She smirked at him in her usual manner and said, “Yeah, B had that effect on people. She made them want to be heroes - even if she also made them want to be evil.”

B? His mom’s name was Buffy, but how did Faith know that? His hand itched to grab his gun, but he knew that he’d never be able to beat her.

“Don’t get your panties in a bunch, Eddie,” she teased, seeing the look in his eyes. “I knew your mom from ‘back home’. I recognized your fighting style as one she adapted from several official types. It’s nice to know she was finally able to get the family she always wanted…even if she still had to deal with supernatural crap.”

A/N: Buffy always has real moms and dads; I thought it would be interesting to see her be a mom once. Thanks to NyxxNoxx for giving me the idea of Edward, even if they suggested him as the parent.
