“And then you just twist it all the way down and back it off a quarter of a turn.” The Fonz was showing Xander and Faith how to adjust the mixture on the Chevy’s carburetor. “Your idle adjuster looks like it’s set a little low, too.”

From across the engine cavity, Faith said, “I knew it had to be the mixture, but I couldn’t find the damn screw."

Charlotte and Kaylee were watching from the front bumper. Charlotte inquired, “Mister Fonzarelli, where *is* the idle adjust?”

“Ay, kid. Call me Fonz, or Fonzie. Never ‘Mister Fonzarelli’. Makes me feel old.” He stepped back and gestured at the firewall side of the unit in question. “This screw here is what you’re looking for. We’ll adjust this after we get it runnin’, though. We don’t want to over-rev the old two-six-teen. She’ll blow a rod for sure.”

Kaylee asked, “So have you fixed a lot of these engines?

The Fonz nodded. “Yeah. The Stovebolt Six and I have a lot of History. I used to work on these when I was a kid back in Milwaukee.” He looked at Xander. “You wanna do the honors?”

“Sure,” Xander replied. He climbed in and started going over the pre-ignition checklist that Uncle Rory had drilled into his head when he’d started driving the Bel Aire.

Key on.

Check.

Pump the gas pedal five times.

Check.

Pull the Choke out.

Check.

Stomp on the starter.

Check.

The engine turned over with a RAWR RAWR RAWR RAWR RAWR and finally caught with a sound similar to that of an angry rabid squirrel. He let up on the starter button and listened to the rumbling roar of the running car.

After about a minute and a half, Fonzie yelled, “OKAY! PUSH THE CHOKE IN ALMOST ALL THE WAY!”

Xander did so, and the engine approached an idle. The Fonz let it sit for another couple of minutes, fiddled about, and then told him to push it all the way in.

The engine bucked and coughed. The old biker smacked the top of the engine with his fist and it smoothed right out.

The others gaped in awe and amazement.

“It’s a gift,” The Fonz explained.
