Several pairs of eyes flickered to take a peek.

“What?” she asked defensively, shrugging in way that she tried to make casual. “It’s not like I even knew until today.”

“You didn’t find it… strange… that you met this man at the same time we began to encounter these demons?” Giles scowled as he removed his glasses to clean, and squinted at her. Not to be intimidated, Buffy puffed up her chest and rolled her eyes.

“Come on, Giles, do you have any idea how many people I meet every week? I mean, I saved five people from vampire attacks last night alone. It’s not like I tell you about every single save I make.”

“No, but I would think that someone saving you should be something you might mention.”

A couple heads turned furtively, trying not to make it obvious.

“He didn’t save me, he just- killed the last demon!”

“With a chainsaw. And you didn’t think this was worth mentioning?”

Everyone in the library turned to stare.

“He- seemed normal.” Her arms crossed over her chest as she pouted, looking away from her Watcher- to find every eye in the room watching with undisguised interest. Her own gaze narrowed dangerously. “I see a whole bunch of Slayers who I know have better things to do than gawk. Or should I start picking some new sparring partners for heavy training sessions?”

Over half the room abruptly scattered, grabbing books and belongings and disappearing in a frenzied rush out the door. Those that were left gave her varying looks that ranged from amusement, to concern, to confusion. Buffy groaned and wondered where the nearest hole was.

“Giles, couldn’t you have picked a better place and time for this discussion?”

“I believe this was an opportune time.” Translation, he meant for this to happen. Stupid, sneaky Watcher.

“Me too. Anything that gets B this riled up has’ta be good.” Faith was the first to speak, a grin on her face as she sauntered over to Buffy’s side. One arm casually was thrown around the smaller Slayer’s shoulders. “What’s the what? And what’s this about someone totin’ a chainsaw?”

“Nothing.” The denial was quick and irritated, an annoyed look settling over the blonde’s features. She didn’t push Faith away, though, simply letting the other woman remain there for the moment. She had a feeling there was no way out of this one.

“Giles, what’s going on?” Willow’s tone was lace with concern as she, too, made her way over, the books she’d been studying forgotten for the moment. Dawn, looking less concerned and more suspicious, followed after her.

“Yeah, what’d Buffy do this time?” The taller brunette’s words were teasing, taunting, and wary all at once, one prim eyebrow arching at her sister.

“It’s nothing, really. Giles is just- getting all worked up about nothing.” See, innocent. Except that none of them were buying it, darn it.

“It seems,” the Watcher began, eyes focused on his Slayer, “that Buffy has discovered this ‘Promised One’ we have been searching for.”

“Whoa, really? Way to go, Buff!” Xander grinned from the spot he’d taken up on her other side, opposite Faith. “I mean, this is a good thing, right? No more trying to play ‘pin the tail on the Promised One’ since Buffy found him for us?” Yet, as his eye darted back and forth between Buffy and Giles, his optimism faded. “Right, guys? So- why am I sensing this isn’t such a happy thing as it’s supposed to be?”

“Because it’s not.” Buffy sighed, and her shoulders slumped a little, giving in. “His name is Ash, and he’s kinda freaked out about the whole thing.”

“Wait a minute.” Faith slid away from Buffy for a moment, eyes wide as she turned to get a better look at the other Slayer. “Ash? As in, the guy you’ve been sneaking out to go see for the past month?”

“What?”

Buffy winced at the concerted question and shocked looks from her friends, even as she scrambled to figure out how on earth her sister Slayer had known about her dates, considering how much trouble she’d gone through to hide them. Faith smirked and arched an eyebrow back at her confused look.

“You seriously thought I wouldn’t notice, B? I may not be smart as Red or Little D, but even I pick up on things. You’ve been dressin’ up extra special, and I know you borrowed some of my clothes.”

“Look,” she said quickly, cutting off the numerous questions that were bound to accompany a bomb announcement like that, “it’s not like it’s anything official yet. And besides, as I said, he kinda freaked when he found out who I was. All he wants is to live a normal life, and not get mixed up in this crap. We’re going to have to do this on our own.”

“You’re kidding, right,” Dawn asked, arms crossing over her chest. “He can’t just run away from this; you saw the prophecy, Buffy. He’s the only one that can defeat these things, and you know it.”

“I am the last person you need to shove prophecy on, Dawn.” Buffy’s answer was immediate and somewhat heated. “I’ve been there, and I know what it’s like. And if Ash doesn’t want to do this, then I’m sure as hell not going to make him, any more than we make the new Slayers join us. We’re not the Watcher’s Council. We don’t make anyone do anything.”

“Good.”

The entire library turned to see the source of the unfamiliar voice. Standing in the doorway was a tall, broad shouldered man with dark hair, a gauntlet, and a chainsaw. His eyes were firm, unflinching, and all for the slim blonde at the center of the group. “Cause no one makes Ash Williams do anything. I’m here cause no one else is as good as me at this. So buckle up, baby. We’re about to go on a wild ride.”
