Coffee?
By Beriaearwen
Buffy winced slightly as she spotted him cutting through the room on a bee-line for her. The amused look on her sister's face did nothing for her mood.
Fortunately, luck was on her side and someone stepped between them.
In that moment when the innocent obscured his line of sight, Buffy slipped through the crowd and made her way to the exit.
The last thing she needed tonight was to be the next notch on Britt Reid's bedpost. Besides - Britt and Buffy? Even she shivered at that name combination.
Making her way to her car, she quickly took off her jewelry and dropped it into her purse.
She would return in a few hours to pick up Dawn. Her little sister did better at these sorts of fundraisers than she did anyway. Yes, she had the social knowledge, but once she got Dawn introduced to the right people, they would talk business and forget she was there.
As she reached the car, the sound of a fight caught her attention.
Glancing down at her designer evening dress and new Manolo's, she knew there wasn't time to change into something else.
Taking off toward the fight, she felt herself impressed when she spotted a not-overly-tall man taking on the group of men and vampires. Pulling a stake from somewhere she'd never reveal to a non-slayer, she felt her breath catch at some of the moves the man made. As she joined the fray, she felt a moment of jealousy at the combination he executed.
She did her best to push her admiration of his fighting out of her mind as she moved to take out the vampires in the group, leaving the men to her unidentified comrade in arms.
Finally, when the men were unconscious and the vampires dust, they stood facing each other.
“Great moves,” she offered, breaking the silence that fell between them.
“You too,” he complimented back.
She felt his eyes roaming over her and cursed Faith for ever planting the idea of the double-H's in her mind, because right now at least one of the H's was screaming at her. She'd always found guys who could really fight something of a turn-on. In her current state... Taking a deep breath, she prepared to walk away. Now was not the time for a hook-up. She didn't do things like that. Even if it had been a really, really, really, like years-long drought in that area, like since Spike since she never trusted the Immortal and he wouldn't get tested or use a condom... but she was digressing. She needed a distraction. “Coffee,” she blurted. Her eyes widened at her odd comment, but she discovered she really liked his smirk-like almost-smile. Seeing the interest and intent in his eyes, she couldn't stop her tongue from slipping out to moisten her lips and... did he just shiver. “Buffy Summers,” she offered, holding out her hand, once she got her thoughts back under control.
He took her hand in his own and, his eyes never leaving hers, bowed over her hand. “Kato,” he replied. Not relinquishing her hand, he stepped closer and to the side, neatly tucking her arm in his own. As he led them away from the still unconscious men, he continued, “I've been told I'm quite talented at making coffee.”
Buffy met his eyes and felt the need within her ratchet up a notch or two. “Really,” she said. “I've had a lot of good coffee, you know.”
Kato smirked at her again, “Not like I make it.”
“That sounds like a challenge.”
“My coffee and my cappuccino is best early in the morning,” he informed before leaning slightly to the side so his mouth was next to her ear, “in bed.” He smiled in satisfaction when he felt her shiver.
Pulling back so she could see his face, Buffy let a little heat show in her eyes and smiled at him, not about to rush things. “Why don't we see how coffee tonight goes, first?”
“As you wish,” Kato acquiesced.
Buffy smiled and allowed him to lead her toward someplace more comfortable - with coffee.
