Buffy opened her eyes and took in her surroundings.

She knew this place.

That was how she knew she wasn't really awake.

The last thing she remembered was hiding at the base of a tree in some bushes and the really hot prince finding her.

No way she went from there to California.

Soon enough her four-footed friend appeared.

“Hello kitty,” she greeted, a small smile on her face.

Following the mountain lion, she walked down the path, this time she stopped at the rock outcropping that reminded her of an arch or doorway.

Turning she looked at the cougar once more and smiled in thanks.

The desert beyond struck a chord within her. Last time she'd seen this place she'd learned that death was her gift and when she woke up, she discovered a sexbot was running around imitating her.

“Here's hoping there's no sexbot or death at the end of this,” she muttered to herself.

As she passed under the archway, she remembered one other thing she'd been told all those years ago. She was full of love.

“You still are, Slayer,” a soft female voice said.

Buffy whirled around and noticed she stood, not in the desert as she thought, but in a glen in the woods. The blonde woman she spotted had pointed ears like the ones in the forest and a kind look in her eyes, though Buffy could feel the power within the other woman. Looking beyond the surface, she could see the power the other woman held. It was terrible and beautiful all at the same time. “And you are?” Buffy asked, unwilling to relax in the presence of this woman, unsure of her intentions.

“I am Galadriel, leader of the Elves of Lothlorien and chosen guide of the Valar.”

Buffy nodded, having understood the words leader, elves and guide. “Um. Yeah. That's nice and all, but what does that have to do with being here? I already got that death is my gift on my last vision quest. I'm not sure you could surprise me with anything more.”

Galadriel's smile turned slightly mischievous. “I wouldn't be so sure,” she murmured before becoming serious. “As myself, you have been chosen by the Valar.”

“Oh, god,” Buffy whispered. “There's a prophesy isn't there? Please tell me there isn't a prophesy. I suck at prophesies, they never end well for me.”

“On the contrary,” Galadriel countered. “You are still here and stronger than before, stronger than any before and the one we have waited on for Ages.”

Buffy could hear the capital letter on Ages and understood what she read in the other woman's eyes a little better. Glancing around, Buffy found a comfortable looking stone and took a seat. “Might as well get down to it.” Seeing the other woman's blank expression, she explained, “Reveal why I'm here and how I can help.” As Galadriel opened her mouth to speak, Buffy threw out one last caveat, “And please, don't feel the need to be cryptic on my account. I could really deal with some straight talking and simple instructions.”

This last statement caused Galadriel to laugh, a sound that created a physical sensation within Buffy who found it impossible not to smile along.

“Very well, young Slayer.”

“Buffy.”

“Very well, Buffy,” Galadriel acquiesced. “I will be as plain as I can in what I have to share, but when you've been around as long as I have, you will realize that cryptic, as you call it, has its uses and its fun.”

“All good and well, but I have a feeling you've been around a lot longer than I ever will be. I figure I've got another ten years before I slow down enough that some vampire or demon has a good day.”

“Hmm. I wouldn't be so sure.”

Buffy's eyebrows shot up at those words, but before she could ask anything, Galadriel continued talking.

“You are on Arda, specifically in Middle Earth. As with your own world, we have a long, rich history here filled with battles, wars, intrigue, romance and everything else that makes life. This is not your... dimension, I believe is the word. We exist parallel to your world, however, the Valar rule in both worlds.”

“The Powers That Be.”

“Yes, that is what you and your friends call them. They have treated our worlds differently, but our worlds have very different needs. I was not told the reason, but I know that you do not look kindly upon them. It is why they asked me to speak to you on their behalf. Perhaps some day you can tell me of your world so I can see your perspective.”

Buffy snorted. “Yeah. Just as an introduction, to why I'm not a fan of the Powers, my day started on Earth getting ready for Thanksgiving - a time when family and friends gather together to celebrate surviving another year. It was the first time we were all together and suddenly this amulet that Dawn has cuts her. I grab the amulet and end up here. No chance to prepare, no weapons, nothing, not even a chance to say goodbye. Then, they drop me in the middle of the woods and I end up having to dodge arrows and running for my life. You beginning to see why I'm not a fan.”

Galadriel's face had closed off slightly, her brow furrowed. “They did not prepare you to come here at all? No information, no mention of the prophesy and they did not allow you your weapons? Or to say goodbye to your family?”

“You sound surprised.” Buffy shrugged. “It's pretty par for the course for them. After all, the first time they sent a messenger to speak to me, they told me to kill the man I loved.”

Shock showed on Galadriel's face. Shaking her head slightly, the elf visibly pushed away those emotions. “Now is not the time to discuss this, but we will speak of it again.” Holding a hand out, she waited for Buffy to take it and stand before leading her over to the mirror sitting on a stone table. “Before you look in the mirror, I will tell you why you are here. There is, indeed, a prophesy, but it only involved you peripherally. The king of men must unite the kingdoms of men. To do so, he must have his close friend with him. That friend is the elf who found you in the woods - Legolas Thranduilion, Prince of Mirkwood. But the darkness threatening Middle Earth hangs heaviest upon his home.”

“So his duty is to stay home and fight, but his destiny is to go with this king guy.”

“Yes.”

“And I'm here to... what? Take his place defending the very people who want me dead?”

A wry smile appeared on the elf's face. “Essentially,” she replied with a smile. “Though the arrows in the woods were a misunderstanding. You are and will be welcome there, though they do not care for humans in general.”

“Wonderful,” she said drily before sighing. “Might as well tell me the rest, what's the what and all that and if I'll ever get home again.” Galadriel's eyes shifted away from her for a moment and Buffy felt her stomach clench. “I'm not going home again am I?”

Galadriel looked back at the young woman. “Your place is here in this dimension.”

Buffy felt her knees grow week at the thought of being stuck here away from her family and all she'd ever known. Now was not the time for this, though. She would break down later when she was back in the real world. Opening her eyes, she felt some surprise at the compassion and determination in Galadriel's eyes.

“There will be rewards for this and all your other sacrifices,” the Elf Queen stated, the authority in her voice carrying the weight of power and prophesy with it.

Buffy believed her.

Shaking her head slightly again, Galadriel offered a small smile. “Come and look in my mirror. It will show you what you need to know of this world: its past, its present and its possible future.”
