I crossed my fingers as I hit the submit button on my application. Somehow it felt like I was breaking a taboo; that I was doing something illicit. I was the slayer, after all, I wasn’t supposed to have a life. To think about going to college somewhere other than Sunnyhell. But I was. So shoot me, I wanted more than just a short violent life killing vampires. I wanted… well, maybe not normalcy, but something closer to it.

It had started last summer, when I’d ‘run away to LA’, heavy sarcasm. I’d thought about just hiding there and moping, but, the fact was, I wasn’t going to let Slaying ruin my life any more than it had. Instead I’d swung by Dad’s, guilted enough money out of him for a trip, and headed back east to see colleges. Eventually I’d ended up at a school called Waverly, and had a fantastic tour from a student, Sarah McGee. She’d told me all about college life, about classes and studies and asshole students, and everything that I’d been missing at Sunnydale. Hell, even at Hemery. You’re not out in the world in tiny places like that. You’re… separate. Away from it all. That had, ultimately, been what sold me. Not just that there was normal out there, but that there were other places. Other things. The world had been fine before I’d come to Sunnydale, it’d be fine if I left. Right?

So when I’d come back, I’d gone behind my Watcher’s back, behind everyone’s really, and I’d applied. Not just to Waverly, but all over, though Waverly was my first choice when you got down to it. It was done now; there was no turning back. I’d hit the button and sent my future flying through the internet. Which meant I had a few months, thank god. I still hadn’t figured out what I’d tell the others if I got in. But that, I decided, was a fight for another day.
