Catherine sighed. Her littlest sister had been hanging out with Greg almost to the exclusion of anyone else at the office picnic. Sara had even pointed out with a wicked grin that it looked like somebody had a crush. If it had been Buffy, there would be no problem. But Dawn…
She marched over to where her underage sister was in the middle of an involved anecdote that involved a lot of hand waving.
“Greg, I need to borrow Dawn for a minute.”
She pulled a bemused Dawn to a slightly more private place.
“Dawn, what gives?”
“What do you mean, what gives? What gives yourself?” Dawn replied, looking completely confused. “I was telling Greg about Spike teaching me to play poker.”
At Catherine’s blank look, Dawn elaborated.
“He didn’t warn me ahead of time that they played for kittens.”
Catherine shook her head. She wasn’t up for distractions, even if it did involve kittens and poker.
“You’ve been spending a lot of time with Greg, Dawn.”
“So?”
“So people have noticed. You’re seventeen.”
“And?”
“And he’s twenty-nine.”
Dawn shrugged.
“If it’s not a problem for him, I don’t see why you’re worried.”
Catherine sighed.
“Dawn, I realize you think you’re grown up and all-“
“No, I don’t. I’m a teenager. But I’m a teenager who lives a very unusual life. What Buffy and I deal with is pretty intense, and it’s not like there are a lot of guys who could handle it. Of those, there are even fewer that I’m interested in. So he’s twelve years older. That’s not that much. And it’s not like I’m stupid enough to do anything before I’m a legal adult.”
Catherine gaped at her.
“Dawn, at your age twelve years is not a trivial difference.”
Dawn rolled her eyes.
“Compared to two hundred something, it’s trivial.”
“Yes…wait, what?”
Dawn smirked.
“Ask Buffy about Angel sometime, specifically how old he was when she was sixteen.”
