Xander stood for a moment in front of the glass wall of Dr. Gregory House’s office. There was no one there, but the woman that he’d talked to -someone in charge of the doctors, an attractive middle-aged woman with dark hair- said he was in today.
Just as he was considering getting some lunch and coming back in the afternoon, he saw the man with the cane from the funeral coming down the hallway. He raised an eyebrow at Xander’s presence, but said nothing as Xander followed him into his office.
“So, the mysterious one-eyed friend. What brings you to my humble hospital?”
Xander answered with a question of his own. “Why were you looking for information on me?”
House didn’t answer either. “It’s funny, Kutner never mentioned you. I’m sure I would have remembered a pirate.”
“He didn’t mention a lot of things.”
The doctor conceded the point with a silent nod. “What happened to your eye?”
“I ran with scissors. What happened to your leg?”
“I’m auditioning for the role of a bitter cripple. What do you think, will I get the part?”
Xander raised an eyebrow and smirked. This guy was good. At least as good at deflection as he had ever been, and way more sarcastic. He dropped into the comfortable-looking chair near the door; it seemed they were at an impasse.
“I hadn’t seen him since he moved away when we were kids, except for the odd vacation and holiday,” he said suddenly, breaking the silence. “We wrote and e-mailed and talked on the phone.” He looked House in the eye. “What was your excuse?”
He didn’t expect an answer, and he didn’t get one. “How did you know I was looking into you?”
He smirked at that. “There’s a lot more to me than meets the eye.”
House smirked back. Xander smiled reluctantly. If anyone could figure out all his secrets, it would be him.
