Six year-old Buffy Summers had been just about to fall asleep when she heard the yells from downstairs. She knew immediately what was happening. Her Father was acting like, as her Mother described it, an angry Daddy and was screaming at her Mother, Joyce, for something she had done wrong. Joyce had always told Buffy not to be afraid of him in these times because he would never hurt her, but as she heard glass shatter she couldn’t help the fear that gripped her. Buffy hated her Dad when he was like this. She never could understand why he was angry all the time.
"Protect me Mr. Gordo,” Buffy whispered as she pulled her stuffed pig closer to her.
She pulled her comforter tighter around her, but when she heard the screams getting louder she knew they were coming closer. Something felt different about the fight and Buffy knew she couldn’t stay there. She quickly jumped out of bed making sure she didn’t leave Mr. Gordo behind. She was glad that she was only on the second floor and that the tree by her window had doubled as a place for her tree house. She quickly took out the screen of her window, like she had done so many times before, and jumped onto the tree. After that it was really easy to climb down the ladder down to the ground.
"Don’t be scared Mr. Gordo,” Buffy told the stuffed pig when she picked him off the floor, “Mr. Gibbs will help us.”
Buffy took off running as fast as her little legs would carry her. When she got to the house she knew that the front door would be open. It wasn’t midnight yet and she knew that Mr. Gibbs would spend his time in his basement. Buffy dashed through the front door and nearly knocked into Gibbs as he was headed to the kitchen.
“What’ are you doing here pretty girl?” Gibbs asked as Buffy threw herself into his arms.
“Daddy’s angry again,” Buffy said as she cried into his shoulder.
Buffy heard Kelly’s Mom Shannon come into the room when she asked what was going on.
“Here Mrs. Gibbs is going to watch you pretty girl,” Gibbs told Buffy, “I’ll go see if I can help your Mommy. Ok?”
Buffy nodded. Gibbs smiled down at her before he passed her into his wife’s arms. After making sure that Buffy was okay he left the house. Buffy was holding on tightly to Shannon when Kelly came out of her room.
“Mommy,” Kelly said as she pulled on her Mom’s leg, “Is Buffy okay?”
“She’s ok,” Shannon replied, “Why don’t you take Buffy into your room and you both go back to sleep.”
Kelly nodded. She was happy for the unexpected sleepover that she was going to get with her best friend. Shannon placed Buffy onto the floor and Kelly took over for Shannon. As they walked to Kelly’s room Shannon could hear Kelly telling Buffy that she wouldn’t get hurt because they had Mr. Gordo and Kelly’s own bear Mr. Wiggles. Gibbs returned a couple minutes later.
“Where’s Buffy?” Gibbs asked.
“I sent her to bed with Kelly,” Shannon replied, “How are things over there?”
“Joyce is embarrassed,” Gibbs replied, “She’s going to make Hank go to AA or she’s going to kick him out. I figured Buffy wouldn’t want to go home anyway.”
Shannon nodded and suggested that they head to bed. Gibbs nodded and after they checked up on the girls they headed into their bedroom. Gibbs could only hope that Hank chose to get the help he needed. He loved Buffy like she was one of his own. He would hurt Hank rather than see that little girl cry again.
