I Didn’t Mean To!

It was a quiet day at the headquarters in Scotland. Quiet because most of the Slayers who lived there had been either sent home for a few weeks or were on rotation.

Buffy was having a good day, prompted by the fact she had the whole Slayground to herself last night. She didn’t have to share kills with anyone.

When her door burst open, she was on her feet with a sword in her hand before she realized it was her sister. “Dawnie? What’s wrong?”

“Unscheduled apocalypse,” she breathed out, panting from her run to get to Buffy.

“Where?” Buffy asked, stepping out from behind her desk and already heading out toward the control room.

“Kind of middle of nowhere,” Dawn supplied. “We knew it as a possibility, but it shouldn’t have started for another thousand years.”

Buffy stopped and turned to face her sister. “Someone jump-started an apocalypse?” Her teeth grit tightly for a moment. “Do we know who?”

“No idea who and yes, they somehow jump-started it. There are only the Scoobies, Faith and Team Eight available at the moment. If this goes according to what we’ve been told, we’ll need everyone.”

“Are there any slayers close enough to fly in?”

“Andrew’s checking now.”

“Good. Let’s see what we need to do.”

It was a rare occasion when any of the Bats left Gotham or Bludhaven for non-team reasons, but they had recently had a string of illegal imports and artifacts coming into Gotham and, while they were able to stop the Gotham end, the artifacts were still coming, meaning they needed to find where they were coming from and put a stop to it.

Some research, cross-referencing and consultation had revealed the items were coming from a dig in Mongolia. The fact they were able to get that much information was impressive. There were no records of it beyond the initial permit and a report that nothing was found.

But an ancient city had been found.

Something this widespread would need to be coordinated among various countries’ law enforcement agencies and the treasures returned. Before they could bring this to official attention, they first needed more proof.

Given their current case loads, it made sense for Nightwing and Robin to go together. Nightwing had just wrapped up a case and Batman and Spoiler would be able to handle what was going on in Gotham.

It was just supposed to be a simple in and out information gathering.

The two had waited until evening when there were only a few guards around the dig and everyone else had retired. They had made their way through to the tent serving as the office. There was on person, the one they’d identified as the bookkeeper sleeping in the tent, but a little knock-out gas and they should stay asleep even while the two masked heroes gathered their data.

They had copied all of the recent entries including shipping tickets and destinations. Names of receivers and lists of inventory.

In among the other papers was a notation about where they would be gathering items the next day.

The duo left the tent and silently made their way to that area of the dig. If they could get pictures of the items in their original location and then in the crates the next day, their case would be solid.

The next shipment was in a rather large building which Tim entered without much thought after they cleared it, but made Dick pause. There was something not right about it. “Robin,” he hissed, moving cautiously and carefully closer. “Careful, there’s something off about this place.”

Robin shrugged, but slowed down and moved more cautiously.

Nightwing, satisfied that his partner was being more careful, moved off to another area. Robin would handle the altar area and he would see about some of the niches where he thought he spotted the glint of gold.

It was several minutes later when a “Huh.” from Robin drew Nightwing’s attention away from taking pictures of the treasures in the niches. As he turned, he was nearly blinded by a light which was growing from an area just behind the altar. Dashing over, he grabbed Robin and demanded, “What did you do?”

“I found this rosette type of thing over there and realized it would fit in the floor over here and put it in the spot,” Robin babbled.

Nightwing tried to focus on the floor where the rosette had gone in, but couldn’t see a way to get it out.

Before he could suggest anything else, there was the sound of stone grinding against stone and the floor behind the altar started to open.

An unholy screech sounded in the night, nearly deafening the heroes.

They started backing up and hurried once the first creature appeared.

The slayer team arrived as close to the location in question as they could. Per their calculations, the portal had been open for eighty minutes at this point. They were expecting that the creatures released from the other dimension would spread. They were pleasantly surprised to find them more or less contained. But they would still hunt down any stragglers later. They needed to get the portal closed now before too many more of the creatures got through.

The fighting was brutal and the screeching of the creatures deafening, but they had to prevail.

Slowly the Slayers, Witches, and Watchers began to beat back the invaders. They were making progress when Buffy spotted two costumed heroes where they shouldn’t be. Buffy’s group stayed as far under the radar as possible. They knew of the heroes, but did everything they could to avoid them. That two Gotham vigilantes were here rang warning bells.

Buffy spoke quietly into her com and requested Dawn and Willow approach. They were the two who had read about this particular apocalypse and knew how to stop it. They knew they needed to have the person who started it take action to stop it.

When her sister and friend arrived, Buffy worked her way near the heroes. “What happened?”

“I didn’t mean to!” Robin called out.

“Oh, goddess. It’s a male Dawn,” Willow gasped, shielding against an attack.

“Hey!” Dawn cried indignantly as she stabbed one of the creatures and then swung to behead it.

“Do you know how to stop these?” Nightwing asked.

“Yes,” Buffy replied, killing two of the creatures. “We’re going to need Robin to join us to stop it. At least from his comment I’m assuming he started it.”

Nightwing grunted as a creature’s thrust glanced off of him. “Yeah. We need to get this done.”

“Follow us,” Buffy advised.

It was brutal. It was ugly. It was everything that is the worst of a fight with the supernatural, but, somehow, they managed to prevail. The portal was closed and the clean-up of the remaining demons was in progress.

“It was the blood moon,” Willow gasped, drained from the power she’d had to use. “That was the only way it could have happened. He put the rosette in at the peak of the blood moon.”

“I’m sorry,” Robin offered, almost pleading. “We were just here to gather some data. I didn’t mean to start the apocalypse! Honest!”

“Meant to or not, it happened,” Dawn replied, voice hoarse from the chants she’d been doing.

“Don’t mess with things you don’t know about. And when you’re on a dig site, never move anything,” Buffy commanded. She was still hyped with energy from the fight, but knew she would be crashing hard later.

“We understand,” Nightwing soothed. “It won’t happen again, right Robin?”

“Absolutely,” Robin eagerly agreed, nodding. “Never again. Ever.”

“Right,” Buffy said, absolutely not believing it. The kid really was another teenage Dawn. She didn’t envy Nightwing and Batman having to keep an eye on him. Maybe they’d keep him in Gotham for a few more years before letting him loose on the world. It was the best they could hope for. “Let’s get the clean-up finished and then we can all go home.”
