A/N 3:

Originally the plan had been to place her under the guardianship of someone with a more normal schedule than SG-1 and then just let her live a normal life, but once they realized how fast and strong she was that changed. A little exaggeration about how often she needed to use those abilities on a much more regular basis than she actually had to, and it was decided to make her Daniel's assistant so she had a reason to be at the SGC to spar with Teal'c. (And also to carry heavy things and artifacts for him.)

That worked for her since it meant she a) got to fight with someone who was able to keep up, b) she got paid for basically being allowed to annoy Daniel, and c) she got to be in the middle of the action even if they wouldn't let her go off-world. It was a win-win situation as far as she was concerned.

Atlantis was the new hot topic, even if most of the returning people spent nearly all of their time in meetings and pretty much only came out when they needed to eat if they were even allowed out for that. Dr. Rodney McKay had pretty much interrogated her after Major Sheppard had called him to the mess hall to inform him that Buffy came from an alternate reality, which ended up being the kind of fun that just wasn't. Thankfully, Vala had been there to save her.

Her friendship with Vala was an odd one. The woman kind of reminded her of Faith, just older, more broken, and much more experienced with life and crime. Still, the woman was loyal to a fault, even if she did occasionally have an odd way of showing it.

However, at the moment she was in Daniel's office working on a translation from a planet some other team had been to and brought back for Daniel to translate. He had merely glanced at it since he was in the middle of another translation while trying to deal with a bored Vala at the same time. While entertaining, it wasn't actually helpful.

He'd given the book to Buffy and told her to take the first crack at it. It was a simple book, leather-bound, and written on what she remembered Merrick calling good-quality parchment. A careful sniff and she guessed it was maybe a couple of centuries old. It was a trick her first Watcher had taught her in an attempt to get her to use all of her Slayer abilities. The leather it was bound in was unfamiliar, which meant that it was either an alien animal or something she had never smelled before. It was a toss-up as to which one.

When she opened it, all the text inside was handwritten in beautiful calligraphy. It wasn't written in the Latin alphabet as she had hoped, but she did recognize it as the same kind of text she had seen in a couple of Giles' books back in Sunnydale. Contrary to popular belief she did crack open a book on occasion and did some studying on her own.

Four hours later and she was absorbed in her translation. She couldn't remember the name of the particular alphabet, and she was obviously not fluent or even very good at it, but she did understand enough to get the gist of the content. It was either a doomsday prophecy or it was a recollection of an actual apocalypse written by one of the few survivors. She wasn't certain.

"Buffy?"

Embarringsly she literally jumped in her chair and made some splotches on her notes. Instinctively she glared at Daniel who had been the one talking to her. "Yes?"

Annoying scholar that he was, he just gave her an amused look. "Interesting translation?"

She sat up and gave him her full attention. "Actually, yes. If my translation is right, then someone either predicted the end of their world, or they have pretty much written a memoir of what happened before and during the destruction of their world and most of its population."

He raised an expressive eyebrow, "They were conquered by the Goa'uld?"

"Nope," and she popped the p. "It's unclear since I either haven't gotten to that point yet or the person who wrote this doesn't know, but there's no mention of Goa'uld, strange voices, or glowing eyes. There's none of the other trademarks either."

"According to SG-6, there were ruins of what looked like some advanced buildings, but no technology as far as they could tell. They also said it had most likely been abandoned for decades if not longer."

"I'd take a guess at a few centuries. 200 years or so."

Daniel inclined his head a little, "Based on what?"

Oops. "Um..." Buffy hesitated.

"Buffy? Why do you think this book is 200 years old?"

She sighed, this wasn't going to be very convincing. "It smells like it."

Both of Daniel's eyebrows went up this time, giving him a sort of cartoon-like surprised face. "The book smells like it's 200 years old?" He sounded just as unconvinced as he looked, but he was ready for her to give him an explanation that would ensure it made sense. So she tried because it was Daniel, and she really liked him. He was the kind of person who would've made an excellent Watcher for someone like her if he had been studying demons instead of Ancient Egypt.

"Yes. You know how I'm stronger and faster than everyone, even Teal'c?"

He gave a slow "Yes," while giving an equally slow nod.

"Well, I might not have been completely honest about what I'm capable of when Jack and Dr. Janet asked..."

Daniel half-sat down on the edge of his desk, "I'd say I'm surprised, but I'm not. So, spill. What else can you do besides kick Teal'c's ass all around the gym and smell the age of a book?"

"I have enhanced senses, hearing, eyesight, night vision, and so on. I can jump really high and do a kind of flying/guided landing sort of thing." She went through the list in her head before deciding if she wanted to reveal all of it or not. "Agility, durability, stamina... It's a long list. But the cliff notes version is that I'm an awesome fighter."

"Yeah, we've all gotten the fighting part. Someone put out a reward for whoever manages to beat you, even if they have to cheat to do it."

Buffy sat up straighter. "Who did that? I'll kick that their posterior for that!"

"Buffy."

"What?"

"We've been through this, you're not allowed to hurt any of them intentionally. They've all been trained ad gone through a lot to get into the Stargate Program. It would be bad form for a teenage girl from an alternate reality to put any of them in the infirmary."

Buffy pouted a little but nodded her consent.

"So, why don't we go through what you've got so far?"

She sat up and scooted over so he could place another chair next to hers.

"Let's."
