Note: Why yes, Isis can fly. And no one knows she's Isis. And things are more complex than they appear.
Summary: Rennie and Joyce are rescued, but this isn't the end.
Andrea was in her lab, writing notes about her meeting with Rick when she received a flash of a warning from Tut. Concentrating, she was able to get a foggy image of what he was seeing.
She'd worked hard at being able to communicate with Tut using the telepathic powers that Isis gave her, but even with her amulet communicating with animals rarely gave her more than vague feelings and hard to understand images.
Tut was an exception but unless she was transformed as Isis, she still had to concentrate extra hard to understand him. She suspected that even with the full magic of Isis the minds of animals would be hard to understand. Or maybe the true goddess Isis didn't have problems speaking to animals but she was just an aspect of the goddess and not the original being.
"That doesn't look good," she said, getting a vision of Joyce and Rennie standing in a ragged opening in a wall, several dozen feet above the ground, from Tut. Writing a quick note to Rick to let him know she'd had to run an errand, Andrea hurried to the roof of the building.
After making sure no one was watching, she took out her amulet, and said in a commanding voice, "Oh Mighty Isis!"
With a rush of heat and the faint smell of desert air, she transformed into Isis. 'Tut! Where are they!' she thought. The image of a large building reached her. She recognized it as the old mansion down by the river that Joyce and Rennie were planning to check out.
With no explanation or visible danger, other than falling, hopefully she could reach them in time.
"O zephyr winds which blow on high, Lift me now so I can fly," she chanted.
With a blast of desert air, she was lifted up into the cloudless sky. Several thousand feet up, she looked in the direction of the river, and spotted the old mansion off in the distance. Concentrating, she flew towards it, as fast as she could.
----
Joyce wasn't quite ready to panic, though she wan't as convinced as Rennie that they would be rescued soon. Hearing a sigh of relief from Rennie, she looked towards the ragged hole.
A woman with long dark hair, wearing a white dress with a fairly foreign look and a short skirt, and an Egyptian looking amulet on a band around her head, almost like a crown, was floating in front of the hole, examining them. Joyce suspected she could be the local superhero, Isis, though there was something faintly familiar about her face.
"Isis!" Rennie said, confirming Joyce's guess. "We're stuck!"
"You appear to be having a problem," Isis said, hovering in front of the jagged opening. "Is there a window missing here?"
"There was supposed to be an apartment, where you are," Joyce said. "But it's just gone!"
Moving back several feet, Isis rotated and examined the building. "It doesn't look like anything is missing here," she said. "No wreckage or damage to the outside, except where you are."
"I can't explain it," Joyce said. "Can you get us out of here? We were trapped."
Isis hummed to herself. Floating over to the hole in the wall, she stepped inside. She wasn't very tall, Joyce noticed, quite dainty in fact. Her cute high heeled boots adding several inches to her height.
"This is supposed to be an apartment?" Isis asked.
"221B," Rennie said. "There's a 221A across the hall."
"And no Sherlock or Watson here?" Isis said, raising an eyebrow.
"No. Pete Patterson and Freddie Franklin," Joyce said, puzzled. "We wanted to talk with them but they aren't here. And their apartment is missing."
"Oh winds of time, reveal the crime," Isis chanted, in a musical voice. A faint glow filled the hall and two men could be seen walking towards the ended of the hall, before there was a bright flash. "They were here and then they weren't," Isis said. "Whatever happened is shielded from me."
"But they were here," Rennie said. "This was their apartment, before it disappeared."
"Yes," Isis said. She gave Joyce a piercing look but said nothing else. "Further investigation will be required. But first let's get you out of here."
"How?" Joyce said. "Do you have a rope so we can climb down?"
"There is a door," Isis said. "Hmmm." Taking a step forward, she walked through the door as if it wasn't there.
"Did you know she could walk through walls?" Joyce said.
"No," Rennie said, looking very surprised. There was a loud noise, and the door opened.
"Come along," Isis said. Walking quickly, she led them to the elevator. "We'll discuss this later," she said. "I'm sure there are people who are looking for you."
"Yes, Isis," Ronnie said. Joyce nodded.
Reaching the lobby, they hurried to the door, pausing when they saw Isis was frowning at the old man at the reception desk.
"I need to speak to someone," Isis said. "I'm sure we'll have a chance to talk about your adventure later. The missing apartment is a concern."
Joyce and Rennie nodded, and hurried outside and towards Rennie's car around behind the building.
"So, that was Isis," Joyce said. "Not a lot to say."
"Nope," Rennie said. "The walking through a wall was cool."
"Definitely," Joyce said. "That would come in handy."
"Yes," Rennie said, grinning. "Sneaking out of the house would be a lot easier. What do we do next?"
"Maybe Andrea's detector has found something?" Joyce said. "I'm not sure what we do about the missing apartment." This was quickly escalating beyond her experience, but she wasn't ready to throw in the towel and call her uncle for help.
"Maybe Miss Thomas or Mr. Mason will have an idea," Rennie said.
"Isis didn't look too happy with the old man who trapped us in that hallway," Joyce said. "But he didn't try to stop us from leaving."
"She's Isis," Rennie said. Climbing into her car, she waited for Joyce to get in before starting it up.
----
Isis waited until Joyce and Rennie had disappeared around the corner before approaching the old man, who was staring at her.
"Lady Isis," he said, visibly frightened. "What brings you here?" His voice shook.
"Where is your Mistress?" Isis said, leaning forward.
"She is away, dealing with an unexpected visitor," the old man said.
"Let your Mistress know I will be having words with her," Isis said.
"Yes, Lady Isis," he said, eyes wide.
Nodding, Isis left the lobby, strolling casually outside. Sighing, she took a deep breath, uttered her flying chant in a low voice and leapt into the sky, heading back to the school.
