Ethan blinked in surprise when he noticed Ripper’s Slayer enter the store, obviously looking for a Halloween outfit. He had several he would love to have her wear and several he needed to ensure she most definitely did not.

He kept an eye on them and let his smile become genuine as he saw which costume had caught her eye. Fairy princess it was.

When she explained what she thought the costume was, he had a momentary qualm, but let it pass. A few minor changes as he was boxing it up for her and everything should be fine.

Buffy was offended on behalf of herself, the kids she was leading and trick-or-treaters everywhere. Toothbrushes on Halloween were absolutely a sign of unfathomable evil.

She lifted her voice to gather her miniature troops when she felt something race through her and she was suddenly standing in a stone room, her mouth wide open as if she’d been screaming.

Closing her mouth, she ducked and spun, sensing the attack from behind her before it could land. She continued her spin, ending up with her back against the wall. Her Slayer senses were going haywire, but she was definitely in the midst of battle. She, now just needed to find her enemy.

There was a certain amount of choas, but it was easy to tell the attackers. They looked about as horrible as the Master, but had … were those wands?

A flash of light shot toward her and she easily evaded, memories of Mrs. Madison rising in her consciousness.

Witches. She knew how to fight these. After the run in with Amy’s mom, she made sure of it. She even had Giles quiz her on the different types of witches and how to combat them.

Unfortunately, she didn’t have the right weapon - or any weapon for that matter - to fight these witches.

Time to improvise.

Moving at Slayer speed, she dodged toward the banquet table and retrieved a few knives including the rather large carving knife.

She saw a body on the floor with a gun in hand, but dismissed it, not knowing how to shoot. Something she would need to ask Giles about when whatever this was got sorted.

Buffy dodged around the screaming people and calculated the best way to handle the witches.

The one on her current side of the room was focused away from her and there was a mirror she could grab on the way. Hopefully it would work on their wand magic much like it did on Mrs. Madison’s.

Moving quickly, she grabbed the mirror and approached the witch.

The witch turned much faster than she expected, something that had not been in Giles’ instructions. Still, with some effort she was faster.

The witch lifted her wand and Buffy jerked the mirror around to block the spell.

She felt some resistance and slowed at the impact, but the spell shot off in a random direction and she winced at the sound of breaking glass.

Slaying was never easy on interiors.

She made it to the witch before she could move or cast another spell and swung the carving knife.

There was some resistance, but a moment later a scream of pain filled the hall, black blood sprayed and a hand hit the floor, wand clutched within.

Buffy saw the other witches turn toward her, but before they could react the doors burst open and a group entered, guns blazing.

The sound was deafening and Buffy couldn’t help the cry of pain as her sensitive hearing was overwhelmed by the sound of guns firing in an enclosed stone room.

With the attention of the other witches on the new group, she stepped forward to finish off her opponent who was trying to grab her wand with her other hand.

Buffy made sure to prevent that by kicking the wand into the wall as hard as she could, even as she swung a forehand at the witch, disemboweling her and then taking her head with the backhand.

Turning to the fight she took in the group and felt slightly jealous of the woman’s outfit. Sure, Buffy loved this dress, but when it came to fighting, the other woman was dressed for it.

She took a moment to admire the, um, sure she’ll go with man who was fighting by the woman’s side. She also took in the other two men and felt very impressed with not only the moves, but the appearance of the blond. Salty goodness and he could fight.

Jumping into the fray, it wasn’t long before there were three dead witches, the five fighters and a few injured or dead.

Buffy was doing a quick scan when the woman said something to the man and she felt her satisfied smile begin to fade. When both guys responded in the same weird language, she felt panic.

It must have shown on her face because suddenly the younger, less fierce guy seemed to notice something was wrong.

He strode forward and tried speaking to her slowly with a kind smile.

Buffy could only shake her head, afraid to say anything. If she had been transported to a different time and place, they might not take too kindly to her speaking a strange language, though it was hard to hear with her ears still ringing. She let her eyes dart around trying to figure out what she could blame or use that would keep them from getting too suspicious and decided to just go with being temporarily deafened.

Shaking her head, she put a hand to her ear and rubbed it, then shook her head.

The woman seemed to understand immediately and stepped forward reaching slowly and taking her by the arm, she spoke clearly and slowly. Buffy allowed herself to be guided to a nearby chair. Before much more could be done or said, a large group cautiously entered the room. If Buffy had to guess, these would be guards and maybe the owners of the house.

Buffy was startled when a woman and a man rushed up to her, grabbed her hands and drew her up into a hug.

Apparently these were parents?

She glanced down, she was definitely still in her Halloween costume.

Her eyes narrowed slightly at the though. Halloween.

She was in this outfit in Sunnydale, now she’s in this outfit in what looks like the time she had been told it represented.

She should have known better than to trust a costume from the Hellmouth. Next year she was making her own.

Hopefully someone in Sunnydale was working on a way to get her home.

Right now, though, she had to do her best to play her part so they wouldn’t think she was a witched or struck by a witch or something.

Her parents were babbling at her in that same strange language everyone else was speaking and she just looked sad and shook her head.

The female fighter explained something to them, but one of Buffy’s reactions must have been slightly off because the better of the human male fighters was giving her a look, and not a “wow are you hot!” look, either.

Though, she thought as she took a few extra seconds to take him in while he talked to the younger human male, if it weren’t for the fact she was only here temporarily, he would most likely think her possessed and she had Angel waiting for her. He was quite the salty goodness.

Shaking that thought off, she allowed the woman, who she assumed was the mother of whoever they thought she was, to guide her away.

Before long she found herself in a room with feminine decorations and a maid waiting.

The mother-type woman said something to the maid and the maid nodded before taking over, leading Buffy to a small changing area with a smile and a nod.

Looked like she was playing deaf for a while yet. Hopefully she would be switched back before anyone came to ask her anything.

She had just started to relax in the not-quite-comfortable bed when she blinked and found herself back in Sunnydale.

Buffy sat at the table, slowly flipping through the pages of the book she’d seen Giles using as a reference for witches. She found a section on the type of witch she’d seen last night in the past and skimmed over it. She didn’t really understand the words, but Giles and others had made notations in the margins, fortunately many of them were in English.

She finished the first page and turned to the next when a small sketch in the corner caught her eye. It looked like some sort of poster and, if the translation was correct, read “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters”.

She smirked a bit at that and studied the image. The weapons weren’t quite as fancy as what they were in real life and, while they’d done an OK job on Gretel, the image of Hansel just didn’t do him justice.

“What’s got your interest?” Giles asked, peering over her shoulder. “Ah, Hansel and Gretel.”

“Witch hunters? Really?” Buffy asked.

Giles shrugged and took the chair next to her. “In this case, yes. There is very little proof, but there were many reports at the time across Europe and the Mediterranean of their work killing this sort of witch.”

“How much of their story is true?”

“Well, if the Watcher reports can be believed, they were left in the woods and found a gingerbread house, but the reason they were left in the woods was actually to protect them. Hansel was forced to eat a fair bit of sugar, which resulted in a dependence on insulin to control his blood sugar, but they were rather fierce.”

“And the Watchers were involved because?”

“At first, they thought Gretel might be a Slayer, but that was proven incorrect. She was just highly trained and motivated. There is a vague story of them fighting some witches with a Slayer, though. Somewhere in Germany I believe it was.”

Buffy froze in her seat and blinked. “Oh, uh. How did that work out?”

“Hmm?” Giles asked, distracted by something on the page.

“Working with the Slayer,” Buffy reminded.

“Oh, we don’t have much more than that. Apparently the girl was called during the battle with the witches. She showed marvelous skill, however, her parents were of the royal family. I’m not sure what her name was or anything else about her.”

Marie Buffy thought. Her name was Marie. It had been the only word that made sense to her. “Might be interesting to find out,” Buffy said casually before changing the subject. She vaguely wondered if Marie was a Slayer because of the Switch or if she was really supposed to be called. Either way, they shared more than a dress.
