New Adventures

Buffy's head tossed in her sleep, her eyes moving in the random patterns of REM sleep. But this wasn't a normal dream.
She was sitting on Giles' desk in an office that was his and wasn't. There were papers, books and artifacts covering it. They were underground and a noise caused her to look up to the door where a man with glasses and shaggy hair in uniform stood, Faith standing to one side so they could both be seen. In the background of all the images was a stone circle with writing around the outside and sparkling blue water inside.
There was a brief flash and she and Faith were fighting back to back in a place she didn't recognize. It felt different, other - not Earth. The stone circle was faintly in the background of this image as well.
Another flash and she and Giles were standing in front of the others, a footlocker each beside them. There was a sense of sadness and excitement. A new start. The stone circle was behind her family, an ocean behind her and Giles.
Another flash and the face of a blue alien with horrible teeth and a slit in the palm of their hand. A stake through the slit and a sword to this throat. The ocean was once more in the background.
Another flash and she was hugging Dawn with the others nearby. There were a bunch of people behind her and Giles, smiling at the reunion. The ocean and stone circle were together once more in the background.
Another flash and a baby crying.
Buffy woke up with a start. As Slayer dreams went, not quite as cryptic as she was used to, but it still shook her.
Reaching over, she turned the bedside lamp on and grabbed her dream journal and pen.
Ever since the mass calling, she had been getting more frequent and less cryptic dreams. Mostly about where various Slayers were needed, but sometimes about Big Bads and how to prepare for them.
In those same years all of their skill sets had expanded.
She was not overly happy that they would be working with the military again, but apparently it was needed. The stone circle didn't make a lot of sense, nor did the ocean, but she had no doubt they would.
A soft knock at her door had her calling out, "Come in."
The door opened softly and Faith slipped in, closing the door behind her. Her own dream journal was in her hand and the other woman settled on Buffy's bed. "Figured they'd hit you too," she greeted.
"The Air Force base?"
"With the stone circle thing," Faith confirmed with a nod. "Looks like knowing soldier boy will finally pay off."
Buffy smiled at that. "Yeah. And it appears ET exists."
"And we'll get to Slay it. The chosen two."
"For a while. Not sure where Giles and I are ending up."
"Noticed you were missing for some of the later things."
The two Slayers were quiet for a while, contemplating the changes facing them and what they would leave behind.
After Sunnydale, there had been more than enough to do with finding the Slayers, the Hellmouths, the Council Funding and so much more. But they had done it. Now they had Slayers set up around the world, schools and homes for those that needed it, an organization that worked for everyone involved, not just the Watchers and trusted people in place.
Xander was still active in the field and did most of the visits. Willow assisted with administration and finance. Andrew had a surprising talent for logistics and Dawn was graduating College this year - a year early - before embarking on an advanced degree. She had stated she would be the one to replace Giles when the time came because that position needed to be filled by someone who loved an active slayer and knew the cost.
"Dawn's not ready yet," Buffy observed softly.
Faith shrugged. "Were we?" She met Buffy's eyes, "She'll be fine and I think there's some time before you leave."
"Before we head off to wherever the US has their secret underground base."
"Why is it always underground?" Faith groused.
"I know, right? Maybe it's so they can bury their heads in the sand easier," Buffy replied. Both of them looked serious for about two seconds before they started laughing.
Changes were coming, but they'd face them together, as a family, just like always.
