The smell of bacon frying broke Jessica out of her slumber, her eyes opening to the bright sunlight of the day. Spell or not spell, some habits never break, and she knew she would never be a morning riser. Taking a moment to stretch in bed, she groaned slightly as she pushed herself out of bed, padding across the floor to slip her feet into her rhinestone encrusted slippers and grab her matching rhinestone and silk robe.
Some things never change indeed and Jessica Wakefield would always make a statement.
Walking through the house towards the kitchen, she was not surprised to see Dawn and her mom finishing breakfast for the large contingent of people that were currently inhabiting the house and the Slayer Barracks. The oddest mix of Slayers, Coven witches, former Sweet Valley residents, and, of course, the twins. Jessica felt a slight pang as she saw how at home her mom looked, enthusiastically showing Dawn how to make an assortment of dishes from scratch, reigning in Dawn’s somewhat…odd specialties.
Waffles with avocado, strawberries, peanut butter, and syrup was oddly good but not something she felt she needed to try again.
She spotted a vacant seat near Lila, and she weaved her way through the large eat-in kitchen, squeezing Elizabeth’s arm as she passed. Her twin gave her a bright smile - she’d clearly been up for hours, so same old Liz in that regard - and continued her conversation with Vi. While it was no surprise that Elizabeth was already excited about the prospect of all the research involved with being a Slayer, what was surprising was how enthused she was about the physical aspect as well.
“I don’t know why that’s a surprise,” Elizabeth had told her the other night, when Jessica had pointed it out. “Remember all the sports we randomly started to play and became amazing almost overnight? Or when I joined the cheerleading squad to help you and somehow managed to mirror you on one of the routines, even though I didn’t have half the experience you did?”
“Point,” Jessica conceded, brow furrowing as she asked, “So why didn’t the witch get you involved with sports on a regular basis? If you were good at it?”
Elizabeth shrugged. “It didn’t fit into her ideas of us? It required too much of a regular schedule that would keep me out of potential ideas? I don’t know.”
Pulling herself out of the memory, Jessica sat down next to Lila. Already, her best frenemy was transforming herself back to her former self. The blond was completely gone from her hair, once again back to her gorgeous shade of brunette. An appointment to remove her breast implants was already booked. And her divorce lawyer was already informed the divorce from Ken would be going through. Immediately.
“I can’t believe we’ll be back in Sweet Valley tomorrow,” Jessica commented to Lila as she grabbed a stack of waffles from the middle of the table, generously drowning her waffles in syrup as Lila watched in disgust.
“We need to go back,” Lila sniffed, taking a dainty bite of her avocado toast. “I need to remind everyone why my family was at the top of the town. Why I was the top of the town. And with the spell de-aging, it’s just an added bonus.”
She, too, had been affected by the de-aging process of the spell, and Willow had explained that, once activated, she couldn’t change that aspect. The spells were all too interwined at this point with their lives and to remove them would be impossible. Instead, the death of the witch had given the Coven the ability to cut-off the spells continuing power.
Meaning, from this point forward, all choices made would be their own. All situations would be of their own making. All drama would be because of what they decided, not what a spell forced.
“Vaughne thinks she found the initial spell all of his is based off of,” Willow said, breaking Lila and Jessica’s attention away from their conversation. “We’ll be going over that with you before we leave.”
“I wish mom and Liz could come,” Jessica said wistfully, glancing over at her mom and twin.
Willow looked at Jessica, apologetically, “With all the magic that has coalesced in Sweet Valley over the years, having all of you there is just asking for trouble. Once we have it all cleared up, all of you will be able to visit again. Together.”
“It’ll probably be best,” Jessica sighed, a smile smirk crossing her face. “Besides, imagine all the trouble I can get into without Liz’s look of disapproval to stop me.”
“Like it ever did,” Elizabeth called out, her enhanced hearing picking up the conversation. Jessica stuck her tongue out at her sister, before popping another bit of waffle in her mouth. Things would be different, now, but she knew some things would always be the same.
