An hour of a lot of poking and prodding later from the friendly red-headed doctor and she had been escorted to a conference room of some kind. Dr. Janet Frasier had kicked out the four original people by using threats to make them into her personal pin cushions if they chose to stay. They had wisely made a hasty retreat and left her behind.
This time she was escorted by a single airman who rebuffed all her attempts to question him by giving single-word non-answers, which wasn't nice. But then again, this place was clearly super secret and very hush-hush, so blabbering would probably get him into trouble. So, in the hope she would get answers from someone else soon, she decided to keep her own council until someone with the power to spill their secrets began talking.
Buffy could hear the four of them talking before she even saw the door to the room, but she didn't let on that she could do that. Not that what they were talking about made any sense to her.
General O'Neill was at the short end of the table with Colonel Carter on his right and Dr. Jackson on his left. Teal'c, who might or might not be some kind of demon, was on Dr. Jackson's other side, which meant she ended up beside the only other woman in the room.
After entering the room and exchanging the usual pleasantries and some minor banter with the General, they got down to business.
"I get that you're confused, but do you know how you got here?"
After a moment of internal debate, she decided to go with an edited version of the truth. "I was thrown into a purple portal." Then off his non-verbal cue by way of a skeptical look, she elaborated a little. "There was a bit of a scuffle and this big ugly guy saw the portal-thingy and lifted me off of the ground and threw me right into it. That's why I came out flying."
"The big guy just threw you into an unforeseen and unstable wormhole? Why?" Even Buffy had no problem catching on to the doubt in the Colonel's voice, even if the woman was trying for non-confrontational.
"I was a little busy being thrown into the portal-thingy to ask," she replied a little snippily. Because, obvious much?
Both O'Neill and Jackson tried to hide their laughter but were unsuccessful, and the latter of the two got a mild glare for his troubles. He only gave her a small unapologetic smile in return.
Before Carter could ask more questions, Jackson decided to interject with his own questioning. "According to Janet, that's to say, Dr. Frasier, she found evidence that you traveled here from another reality. So it would be very helpful if you could tell us everything you remember from before you were thrown into the wormhole."
"Wow, hey now. What do you mean this is another reality? Are you sure? How do you know?"
"We're sure. We have both been visited by people from other realities before and visited a few ones ourselves. If we get enough information we might be able to send you back to yours. I'm sure there are people there who are missing you."
Buffy's head wrinkled as she thought back to an hour before. The demon had been tall and ugly, but half of them fit that description. Giles had told her the name of the demon's species, but she had forgotten it even before she came across it again. It didn't have magic and it didn't work for anyone who was able to do something like this. There hadn't been witches or warlocks or magical things nearby. There was nothing to indicate why there was a reality traveling portal appearing right next to where she was fighting the demon of the week.
"Um," she hedged. "I don't know. It was a back alley," because that was usually where she found them unless they were in cemeteries or vacant warehouses. "You know, a few dumpsters, empty bottles on the ground, and some trash. There was nothing to explain this," and she waved both of her hands to encompass the absurdity of her current situation.
O'Neill ran a hand across his face. "How about electronics? Did you see any of those laying around? Perhaps something that was unfamiliar to you?"
"Nope," and she popped the 'p'. "Do you think there were alien electronics there and that they somehow zapped the portal into existence and sent me to a random super secret military base in another reality? Because that would be some bad planning on someone's part. Especially since they didn't bother to ask if I want to reality travel." Buffy frowned. "Is it called reality travel? It sounds weirdly weird."
She was aiming the questions at the General, but it was Carter who replied. "We don't know what happened, that's why we're asking you all these questions." Then added, "reality travel works. Or travel between realities. There's no specific vernacular."
"Oh. I don't know what to tell you. There was nothing unusual about the situation, except for the portal. I'd been in scuffles in that particular alley before."
That got her another round of frowny faces. "You get into a lot of fights in back alleys?"
She shrugged eloquently and a little sheepishly. "Yes?"
Jackson kind of looked like he wanted to put her under a microscope again, "Why?"
"I, umm." She mentally face-palmed herself. Somehow she managed to accidentally talk herself into these situations, and now there were four people expecting a non-evasive answer from her.
"I. Look, I'm not allowed to tell you." Yup, that was lame. It was true, but definitely making it look like she was hiding something. What she needed pronto was a crash course in how to lie convincingly.
"Buffy, we can't help you unless you're honest with us." Then hesitating a little, he asked carefully, "Were you there for money?"
Utterly confused, she asked, "Why would I be looking for money in a back alley?"
As the cute geek opened his mouth to reply an ear-piercing alarm sounded and a robotic female voice began saying, "Unscheduled off-world activation." over and over again. All four of the people around her got up and immediately went for the door.
General O'Neill turned to her when she got up as well to follow. He pointed her back to the office chair she had just gotten up from, "You stay here. We'll deal with this and then we'll get back to getting you back home." She tried to argue, but he used what she guessed was his 'I'm the General' voice, and she sat back down.
The alarm was turned off soon after they had left. Her head kept ringing for another few minutes though. Louds sirens and Slayer hearing were not a good combination. As she looked around the room she suddenly found herself in alone, she suddenly realized there was a wide window on one side. After a quick look at the door O'Neill and his friends had left through, she got up and power walked over to see what there was to see.
As she had suspected, it gave a great bird's view of the room she had arrived in. There was the ramp and the huge strange metal circle that had given off a strange feeling. The soldiers were pointing their guns towards the circle again, but after a conversation that sounded decidedly strange to her, the shield was lowered. Soon after a bunch of people came through with weapons firing and trying to kill everyone down there.
Everything descended into chaos after that, and she decided it was time to join in. Maybe this was her new destiny?
